7 shootings in Minneapolis in less than 24 hours left several people dead and more injured

The shootings were all separate incidents MPD responded to, starting with a double fatal shooting in Dinkytown early Sunday morning.

MINNEAPOLIS — The violence on Sunday started with three people shot inside a Dinkytown cigar and tobacco shop. Police said in an overnight briefing that they believe an altercation led to two people being killed and one employee being shot and injured. The employee is expected to survive his injuries.

A tattoo shop employee who works next door to the tobacco shop says he was shocked to see the broken glass when he got in Sunday morning to work.

“I hear it can be sketchy here in the evenings and on the weekends but I don’t know it’s usually pretty quiet,” Tattoo artist Adam Underwood said. “It’s a college area, it’s Dinkytown. At least in the daytime, there’s not a lot of crime or anything like that.”

Just a few minutes after that shooting before 2:40 a.m., Minneapolis police were also called to Lake Street and Grand in Uptown where they found a man injured in another shooting.

“It was in a parking lot outside, where some kind of altercation occurred that escalated into gunfire,” Minneapolis Police Sgt. Garrett Parten said. He added that they don’t suspect the two shootings are connected but they are continuing to investigate.

“Here we have an example, at least twice tonight where it appears that an altercation is solved with guns, and that’s absolutely unacceptable,” he added.

Then Sunday afternoon, another man was found shot and injured outside of Winner Gas station at Broadway and Lyndale. That victim was taken to the hospital, and police have no suspect information available.

Same with another shooting that happened on the 600 block of Penn Avenue North, 10 minutes before 2 p.m. Police said a man was shot and injured, while he was standing outside and shots came from a passing vehicle.

Also in the afternoon,  police responded to the area near Penn Ave and Lowry. Another man was injured in a shooting. Police said he too was standing outside when shots were fired.

Just before 8 p.m., police were called to 4th Avenue S. and East Lake Street, where another person was shot and injured.

According to this press release, just a few minutes after midnight, on Monday morning, police were investigating a fatal shooting that killed a man and injured a woman. The shooting happened near East Lake Street and South 12th Avenue, where police found a man in his 30s on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds. A woman in her 40s, who was injured was taken to the hospital.
