Brawl breaks out at Minneapolis middle school, spills into street
Police say up to 200 people – adults and children – were involved in the brawl that started in the Sullivan STEAM School gym and spilled into the streets.
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police are trying to determine what ignited a fight inside a middle school gymnasium that eventually spilled out into the street, involving up to 200 people.
The incident happened just after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan STEAM School, 3100 e. 28th St. Witnesses told Minneapolis police that the altercation started in the gym following a basketball game and then moved outside. Officers from MPD, Metro Transit, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol responded to the scene, broke up the fight and asked people to leave the area.
It is estimated that up to 200 adults and children were involved in the altercation. No serious injuries were reported, and police say no arrests were made. An investigation into the incident continues.
Police say it does not appear that Thursday’s fight is related to one that erupted Tuesday at North Community High School. A statement from the Minneapolis Public Schools confirms that an altercation broke out during the final minutes of a girl’s basketball game between North and Henry involving players and students from opposing teams.
The district says play was suspended and security personnel responded to the scene. North and Henry High Schools are working towards bringing students from both teams together to repair harm to the community.
“We follow the MPS discipline policy in instances of fighting,” reads the statement from the district. “We are committed to taking actions to provide a safe learning environment for all students, and a safe working environment for all staff.”
Meanwhile, the Minnesota State High School League is investigating the incident and will issue an official report on what happened. Depending on the findings, sanctions or student discipline could be issued.

The suspect was 17 at the time of the shooting, but he was charged as an adult.
A St. Paul man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, more than two years after a drive-by shooting left a 17-year-old dead.
Casimir Semlak, of St. Paul, was charged with shooting 17-year-old Anthony Skelley in May 2022 during an apparent drug deal in South St. Paul. Police say a search of Skelley’s cell phone uncovered that the last number he was in communication with was linked to the suspect.
Semlak was also 17 at the time but was charged in the adult court system.
Following his death, family members told KARE 11 in a statement that Skelley was a junior attending St. Paul Public Schools’ Gateway to College program, and had “a beautiful soul with a cheerful presence and a joyful spirit.”
Semlak will be sentenced in January 2025.
The Moorhead Police Department said Paige Reinke was last seen Sunday wearing a blue sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.
MOORHEAD, Minn. — Officials are asking for the public’s help locating a 17-year-old Moorhead girl that is believed to be endangered.
According to the Moorhead Police Department, Paige Reinke was last seen Sunday near the 2600 block of River Drive North wearing a blue sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) describes her as 5-foot-4, 155 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
