BCA: Oakdale officer returned fire during Monday’s standoff
Officials say Officer Andrew Dickman fired one shot with his handgun after a suspect fired at officers while running into a home in Oakdale.
OAKDALE, Minn. — An officer with the Oakdale Police Department returned fire during a standoff Monday night, according to officials.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said Officer Andrew Dickman fired his handgun after a suspect shot at police while running into a home in Oakdale. Prosecutors say the suspect, 25-year-old Devione Malone, barricaded himself inside the residence. At one point, Malone allegedly fired three more shots at officers through the window of the home before officials were able to take him into custody.
Malone is charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, four counts of assaulting an officer by attempting to use deadly force and one count for illegally possessing a firearm.
According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to the Bergen Plaza in Oakdale after a report that a woman was in trouble and needed assistance. A witness told police that their friend and the friend’s 1.5-year-old granddaughter were in a vehicle with a man, later identified as Malone, who had previously been ordered to have no contact with the friend.
Prosecutors say four officers attempted to surround the vehicle, however, the vehicle took off and police initiated a pursuit. Court documents say that the driver, later identified as Malone, was believed to be heading to the woman’s home on the 100 block of Greystone Avenue North. Officers broke away from the pursuit and headed toward the woman’s residence. When Malone pulled into the driveway, prosecutors say he quickly left the vehicle and fired at officers. That’s when the BCA says Dickman returned fire.
According to court documents, Malone ran into the home and barricaded himself inside the residence. While Malone was in the home, the woman and her granddaughter were able to escape the vehicle and run to the police officers on scene. Police say the woman and her granddaughter were both unharmed.
Four officers parked in front of the home, and took cover while Malone was barricaded inside the home. At one point, Malone fired three shots at officers from the window of the residence. Court documents say one of those shots hit the windshield of one of the squad cars near one of the officers.

The Washington County SWAT team arrived, and after a standoff that lasted “several hours,” Malone was taken into custody. Officials say nobody else was inside the home. According to court documents, Malone admitted to owning and carrying a .22 caliber handgun. When speaking with investigators, Malone said he didn’t remember shooting at officers.
Dickman has three years of law enforcement experience and is currently on standard administrative leave. The BCA said the officers, including Dickman, were all wearing body cameras. The incident was also captured on squad camera video, according to officials.

Police are investigating after three men were shot early on Saturday morning.
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police are investigating after three men were shot in the Ventura Village neighborhood early Saturday morning.
According to Minneapolis police, officers were called to the area around East 21st Street and South 15th Avenue around 5 a.m. Saturday.
Officers found three men had been shot. One of the men died and the two others were taken to the hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries.
Officials said the shooting happened at a small homeless encampment.
Police have not announced any arrests as of Saturday morning.
