It’s one of the very few to offer 4K video resolution, with a full head-to-toe view of the person at your door. Using your smartphone, you can also adjust the zoom (up to 8x) and take advantage of full-color night vision.
This video doorbell gets hardwired to your home’s power, but it uses the wiring from your existing doorbell, so installation is very easy. While it comes with a 32GB microSD card for internal storage, you can upgrade the card up to 256GB.
To avoid charging subscription fees, the manufacturer doesn’t offer cloud-based storage.
Some of the other features that really impressed us include the AI recognition and smart detection of people, animals, vehicles and packages. At night, the integrated motion sensor not only generates an alert to your smartphone when someone approaches, but a nightlight is automatically turned on. Clear two-way talk and an included chime kit are other impressive features.

Up front, the Blink video doorbell is one of the most affordable you can get, but to unlock all of its features and functions (beyond just live view streaming in five-minute increments), you’ll need to subscribe to either the Blink Basic ($3/month) or Blink Plus ($10/month) plan.
In exchange, you get live video recording, motion detection video recording, 60-day unlimited video history, auto local storage backup, person detection and up to 90 minutes of continuous live-stream viewing via a smartphone or home hub.
Video resolution is an impressive 1080p, although you do not get full-color night vision. For local video storage, you’ll need either the Blink Sync Module (sold separately) or a USB flash drive.
Using batteries, the doorbell will function for up to six months at a time, but you can use your home’s existing wiring and chime to give the Blink video doorbell continuous power. The device connects wirelessly to your home’s Wi-Fi (2.4GHz band only).

What you’re paying for with the Ring Elite is its higher-end, more elegant design that includes flush-mounting and hardwired installation. You can choose from four decorative faceplate options — satin nickel, pearl white, Venetian or satin black.
To take full advantage of all the Ring doorbell security features, you’ll need a subscription to Ring Protect. There are three plans — Basic ($3.99/month), Plus ($10/month) or Pro ($20/month). All of the plans include 180-day video history, video saving and sharing, snapshot capture, person alerts, smart notifications and compatibility with other Ring home security gear.
From a technology standpoint, you get 1080p video resolution with infrared night vision and a decent field of view. All of the Ring’s functionality is managed through the Ring mobile app, although it’s also compatible with Amazon Echo home hubs. You get access the live video feed from a Windows PC or Mac.
There are certainly more advanced video doorbells that cost less money, but none look as nice as the Elite, or are supported by the Ring ecosystem that includes smart locks, outdoor smart lighting, remote security cameras and full home security systems that can all be managed from the same app.

With a paid subscription, functionality of this Arlo Essential doorbell expands dramatically to include cellular and battery backup, 30-day video storage in the cloud, AI-based detection (people, vehicles, animals and packages), smart notifications, 24/7 professional monitoring and a collection of other features.
The 180-degree (diagonal) viewing angle allows you to see the entire body of the person at your door, including anything on the ground (such as packages or animals). Another handy feature is that when someone presses the doorbell, a video call to your smartphone starts automatically. And if you want to scare off an intruder, the video doorbell has a built-in, remotely controlled security siren.
Yet another great thing about the Arlo Essential video doorbell is that it’s compatible with a wide range of other equipment, including just about any internet-connected smartphone or home hub; other home security gear from Arlo (such as a home security system or separate security cameras and floodlights); or smart devices that support the IFTTT protocol.
Things to consider when buying a video doorbell
Each of the companies featured in this roundup, along with many others, offer multiple video doorbell models that range in price from below $100 to well over $500. When it comes to choosing which video doorbell will work best in your home, here are some important things to consider:
- Resolution: Don’t settle for anything less than 1080p, although 2K or even 4K is better.
- Two-way talk functionality: When someone approaches your door, you want to be able to see, hear and speak with them in real time.
- Smart notifications: The mobile app used with the video doorbell should distinguish between people, animals, vehicles and packages. The best video doorbells that use AI-based recognition should also differentiate between family members, frequent guests and strangers and then alert you accordingly.
- Subscription: Several of the best video doorbells rely on local storage and do not require an ongoing paid subscription, yet you still get the same advanced home security features and functions. If the video doorbell you choose does offer a subscription, determine if you really need it and what functionality you get without it.
- Night vision: You want the camera built into the video doorbell to function day and at night, allowing you to clearly see anyone who approaches. If the video doorbell supports the IFTTT protocol, it’ll work with an even broader range of smart-home gear.
- Power: Do you want a battery-powered video doorbell, or one that’s hardwired to your home’s electricity? If you go with the battery option, you’ll periodically need to recharge or replace the batteries. The hardwired option will require a bit more installation effort initially, but will then operate using your home’s power. All video doorbells require power and active Wi-Fi to operate.
- Security: At the very least, you want to be sure that anything recorded by the doorbell is encrypted and not shared with third parties. As soon as you activate your new video doorbell, be sure to change the account username, password and network name from its default settings and be sure you have a firewall active through your home’s Wi-Fi and internet connection.
Immunocompromised people who are age 65 or older should get a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In a statement released Wednesday, the CDC said the second dose should be received six months after the first dose.
The CDC also said its recommendations allow for flexibility for those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised to consider additional doses (three or more). in consultation with their health care provider.
In August, the Food and Drug Administration greenlit updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna for the 2024 fall season. The updated shots were revised to target the KP.2 variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and medical experts say it will also provide protection against other recent strains.
This was part of a now-annual process undertaken by the FDA and health authorities around the world to update the vaccines to protect against newer strains of the virus.
Similar to previous seasons, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all Americans ages 6 months and older get a shot of the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against another expected surge of the virus this fall and winter.
Still, as another fall virus season approaches, not everyone is following the CDC’s advice. According to a survey from Ohio State Wexner Medical Center last month, less than half of Americans were planning to get their COVID or flu shots this season.
“Data continues to confirm the importance of vaccination to protect those most at risk for severe outcomes of COVID-19,” the CDC noted in the latest release. “Receiving recommended 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccines can restore and enhance protection against the virus variants currently responsible for most infections and hospitalizations in the United States.”
The CDC also reminded the public that the COVID-19 vaccine can help reduce the chances of suffering the effects of long COVID.

With the average amount of home equity near a record of approximately $330,000 right now, homeowners have a large amount of money to utilize as they see fit. Whether they use those funds to pay for a wedding, a college education or to consolidate high interest credit card debt, home equity is often the smart way to do so. And it’s one of the least expensive alternatives, now that credit card interest rates are near 23% while personal loan rates are approaching 13%.
While there are multiple ways to tap into your home equity, from cash-out refinancing to reverse mortgages, two of the more attractive options right now are home equity loans and home equity lines of credit (HELOCs). Although both offer borrowers inexpensive ways to tap into their equity, they don’t operate in precisely the same way – and their interest rates aren’t identical, either. Going into November, then, when another cut to the federal funds rate is anticipated, which will be better for borrowers? That’s what we’ll break down below.

Will a HELOC or home equity loan be better this November?
While the benefits of each of these home equity options depend on the individual borrower profile, there are some timely elements to account for this November. Here’s what to consider:
Why a HELOC could be better this November
If you’re a borrower determined to take advantage of the lowest interest rate possible then it makes sense to pursue a HELOC this November instead of a home equity loan – despite the latter have the slightly lower interest rate. Here’s why: HELOCs have variable interest rates that will change monthly as the overall rate climate evolves. This is a distinct advantage this November and, likely, in the months to come as interest rate cuts continue to be issued.
So the 8.69% HELOC rate you open the line of credit with today could be lower in December, January and beyond. The 8.35% home equity loan rate, however, will need to be refinanced to secure any future rate savings. And you’ll need to pay refinancing costs to get that rate (often 1% to 5% of the total loan value). So, in short, if you want to be best positioned to capitalize on future interest rate cuts, a HELOC could be better for you this November.
Why a home equity loan could be better this November
If waiting for rates to be cut – and there’s no guarantee that they will or by how much – is too risky for your financial circumstances, then a home equity loan could be better this November. These loans do come with a slightly lower interest rate than HELOCs, which may seem marginal on paper but can add up to substantial savings over a 10 or 15-year repayment period.
But they’ll also protect you against any future interest rate volatility, making your monthly payments in December and beyond easy to budget for. And if rates wind up dropping by a significant amount in the winter or spring of 2025, you could always refinance then – while still gaining access to the low interest rate funding you need this fall.
The bottom line
The choice between a HELOC or a home equity loan this November is a personal one, largely dependent on your financial situation and appetite for rate volatility. No matter which option you ultimately choose, however, be sure to only withdraw an amount of equity that you can easily afford to repay. With the average amount of home equity high now, it may be tempting to overborrow. But that would be a mistake since your home is collateral in this borrowing exchange and you could wind up losing it if unable to repay all that you’ve withdrawn.
