Two Burnsville police officers injured in hourslong standoff
Two Burnsville police officers suffered minor injuries during an eight-hour standoff that extended into Sunday morning, police said.
Officers responded to a home on the 15800 block of Buck Hill Road at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday after reports of a gunshot, according to a Burnsville Police press release. A woman suspected of firing the gun was inside.
Officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect. She was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Sunday and taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, the press release said. The officers also received medical attention.
Some nearby homes were evacuated during the incident. A shelter-in-place order issued for the area has been lifted.
The incident occurred less than two months after two Burnsville police officers, Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, and firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth were killed responding to a domestic abuse call that resulted in an hourslong standoff.
Another closure of I-494 in the south metro will put thousands of motorists on detour this weekend.
The eastbound lanes of the freeway will be shut down between Hwy. 100 and Cedar Avenue/Hwy. 77 and westbound lanes between Cedar Avenue/Hwy. 77 and Interstate 35W from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
Some ramps leading to I-494 will start closing at 8 p.m. Friday. Motorists will be directed to use Crosstown Hwy. 62 to get around the closure, the agency said.
American Boulevard, which runs parallel to I-494, will be closed starting Monday through Nov. 11 between Hwy. 100 and France Avenue in Bloomington.

The closures are related to construction in which MnDOT is adding an EZ Pass lane on I-494 between I-35W and Hwy. 100, rebuilding the I-35W/I-494 interchange and replacing bridges over I-494 at Portland, Nicollet and 12th avenues.
In the west metro, westbound Hwy. 55 remains closed through Nov. 1 between Hwy. 169 and Interstate 494. Motorists can use I-394 as a detour MnDOT said.

Blaine High School is transitioning from a once-a-week food deliveries to a twice-a-week delivery schedule. The school was running out of storage space for the volume of food it was getting to meet demand, said Noah Atlas, Anoka-Hennepin’s director of child nutrition. Such a shift, he said, might soon be needed at Coon Rapids Middle School, where delivery time requires the Tetris-like strategy of fitting boxes of juice and milk into the cold storage room.
Schools also now have to be pushier about asking parents to fill out paperwork that once determined whether a family qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. Those forms are no longer required to get lunch or breakfast, but they are still used to calculate how much state funding districts receive for other programs, including extra support for students learning English, for example.
“Nutrition programs have had to work all through these challenges,” Peterson said. “But in the end, the payoff is that we’re seeing better behavior of the students, and their attention span has increased because they’re not hungry.”
