Kwest for Kwik Trip’s bagged milk

Kwik Trip is discontinuing bagged milk.

Which is unfair, because some of us just learned that milk in a bag is a thing. Now we’ll never know whether we were supposed to drink it or play cornhole with it.

Milk in a bag was beloved by a large swath of Canada, Wisconsin and select Minnesotans. By May, it will vanish from the milk crates in the bottom of the refrigerated crates in the gas stations. But after four decades of production, Kwik Trip says it no longer makes fiscal sense to keep bagging milk in a milk carton world.

Which left me very little time to grab a bag of milk. The thing I never knew I wanted until I couldn’t have it.

My Kwest for a Kwik bag o’ milk led me to the Kwik Trip just off the interstate in Plymouth. Honestly, is there anything Plymouth doesn’t have?

Since there’s no use crying over bagged milk, let’s celebrate what we had. It was cheap, it was convenient, it used less plastic than a jug and it was jiggly and fun. You will be missed, milk bag.

Why bag the milk? According to a deep dive the CBC took on the topic, the practice began half a century ago, when plastic was pricier and Canada was transitioning to the metric system. It was a lot easier to change a one-quart bag of milk to 1.3-liters than to retrofit an entire assembly line for resized milk jugs or cartons.

All you needed with a milk bag was a milk jug. Some Kwik Trips may still have them in stock. Do not just stab the bag of milk with a straw like a giant Capri-Sun. The Canadians have posted helpful how-to instructions online. Thank you kindly, Canada.

And in conclusion, would anyone like a bag of milk? I forgot to pick up a jug and now it’s just rolling around my refrigerator like a Shmoo.

”We do not take lightly our responsibility as one of the area’s largest employers,” the company said. ”But, under these circumstances, we feel that a plant closure is the most prudent course.”

The company said it is appointing a new chief food safety officer who will report to its president. It is also establishing a safety council comprised of independent experts, including Mindy Brashears, a former food safety chief at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Frank Yiannas, a former deputy commissioner for food policy at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

‘’This is a dark moment in our company’s history, but we intend to use this as an opportunity to enhance food safety programs not just for our company, but for the entire industry,’’ the company said.

A Texas man staying with his three children at his brother’s apartment in Brooklyn Center was allegedly on the phone all day and lying in bed when his 3-year-old son fell out of a window and died.

Saleban Abdullahi Duale was charged with second-degree manslaughter in Hennepin County District Court on Friday after police allege that his negligence directly caused the death of his son.

According to the charges:

Police were called to a Brooklyn Center apartment building and found the injured boy on the ground. He later died at the scene. An initial investigation concluded that the child had fallen out of an eighth-story window.

Duale was identified as the boy’s father and told police he was staying with his three sons at his brother’s apartment. He said he had stepped out of the room when the child fell. Police observed that there was a couch placed directly in front of the open window.

Child Protective Service’s conducted interviews with Duale’s other two sons, ages 9 and 8. The 9-year-old told them his father had been lying on a bed in the bedroom and was not in the living room when the boy fell. He said the 3-year-old had pushed a window screen open before falling.

The 8-year-old said that his father had been on the phone all day and he never saw him in the living room or kitchen when his brother fell.

Duale is not in custody and no attorney was listed for him. A summons was issued for him to appear in court on September 30.

A 16-year-old with a criminal history was charged Friday with fatally shooting a man standing outside in St. Paul early in the afternoon and fleeing on a bicycle.

Knyaw Taw, of St. Paul, was charged in a juvenile petition filed in Ramsey County District Court with second-degree intentional murder in connection with the shooting Tuesday of Davion Lamonte-Paule Brown, 22, of St Paul, in the 1300 block of E. Maryland Avenue.

Taw remains in custody ahead of a court appearance later Friday. The County Attorney’s Office has indicated it will pursue having Taw prosecuted in adult court, where a conviction would mean a more severe sentence.

The criminal complaint did not offer a motive for the killing.

Taw has been arrested multiple times earlier in Ramsey County and had an active warrant for his arrest. The complaint included no details about his earlier alleged offenses.

According to the complaint:

Video surveillance showed Kaw, wearing a mask, riding a bicycle toward a parked SUV. Kaw got off the bike and exchanged words with people in the vehicle, then shot Brown, who is standing outside with others. Kaw continued shooting Brown after his victim fell to the pavement. He then fled the scene on the bicycle.

Officers arrived shortly before 12:30 p.m. and saw Brown suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics took him to Regions Hospital, where he died.
