MPD makes “numerous” arrests after fireworks launched at officers

MPD Chief Brian O’Hara said despite dodging fireworks himself, the scene is overall less chaotic than July 4, 2023.

MINNEAPOLIS — Editor’s Note: This video originally aired the morning of July 4, 2024.

Dinkytown received an unwanted Fourth of July fireworks show late Thursday night as people launched fireworks at passersby, officers and nearby property.

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) made “numerous” arrests throughout Thursday night into early Friday morning, according to spokesperson Trevor Folke. KARE 11 photographer David Peterlinz spoke with MPD Chief Brian O’Hara after a group threw a mortar in his direction at a Dinkytown intersection.

“I was standing at the intersection one block over, there were a couple of troopers with us … and a group ran up from behind us and threw a large mortar at us landing in the street a couple feet away,” O’Hara said.

O’Hara said officers arrested two juveniles, one from Andover, after that incident.

“The ridiculous behavior that goes on here as far as people throwing mortars, and explosives really at people or at buildings is outrageous,” he said. “And we’re doing everything that we can to identify the specific individuals in these groups that are responsible for that and arresting them, towing their cars whenever possible.”

In a press conference July 3, the chief said he was concerned about teens coming into the city from outside of Minneapolis to create a viral video.

“These are out-of-towners, not people from Minneapolis, coming here and disrupting our residents’ lives,” O’Hara said July 3.

Despite the mayhem, the chief said this year’s July 4 is overall less chaotic than previous years.

“It’s not as bad as last year and the problems we’ve been seeing, are over here [in] Dinkytown on the east side of the river,” he said.

In comparison,16 people were arrested for fireworks incidents in 2023 and 11 of those were juveniles.

MINNEAPOLIS — Three people were rushed to HCMC after a shooting occurred near Fifth Street North and Hennepin Avenue early Monday morning.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. outside Augie’s Bourbon Street Cabaret in downtown. Minneapolis police said two men in their 20s were shot and hospitalized with potentially life-threatening wounds and a woman in her 30s received non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Minneapolis police said officers believe the shooting began as an altercation and escalated to gunfire in front of a crowd. There have been no arrests but investigators are working to find connections between the victims and a possible shooter.

Otsego man donates blood for 50 years

“I do it every few weeks and for me it’s worth it,” said Tom Sammler, who has donated blood for the past 50 years.

Tom Sammler is no stranger when it comes to donating blood.

“I enjoy doing it,” Sammler said. “It takes three hours of my time. I do it every few weeks and for me it’s worth it!”

For the past 50 years, this A-negative donor is nothing but positive. Sammler has been rolling up his sleeves and he has donated 78 gallons of life-saving blood and counting.

“I’ve got the time, I don’t mind, like I say its something I know is worthwhile,” Sammler said.

Memorial Blood Centers Maureen Maher said just one donation can save up to three lives, but in the summer months, the number of donors goes down.

“There’s always a need especially for the universal blood type,” Maureen said. “People with O-negative are always needed because they can help, it’s a universal blood type. They can help many people and there is so many people that need blood transfusions throughout the year, whether it’s a cancer patient that need some help to a pre-mature baby or somebody fighting blood cancer, so really the need is constant.”

Maureen said 62% of the population is eligible to give blood but only 3% do, but with the help of others that could change.

“It’s such a selfless things to do and it’s so easy,” Maureen said.

Coming up on July 9, KARE 11 is hosting a Health Fair 11 Summer Blood Drive. If you’d like to donate, the drive is at the Minneapolis Marriott West Hotel in St. Louis Park from 1 to 7 p.m.

Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome!
