The best Apple iPad deals available right now during Prime Day

For a limited time, Amazon has reduced the prices of the most popular Apple iPad tablets during its Prime Day 2024 sale event. You’ll need to choose how much storage you want, the tablet’s casing color and between a Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + cellular model. And if you’re choosing one of the higher-end 2024 iPad Pro models, you can upgrade the display to include nano-texture glass. Here are some of the very best iPad deals available right now.

Apple iPad 9th Generation (64GB, Wi-Fi only): $249 (save 24%)

Apple iPad 9th Generation

Amazon

Perfect for younger users or non-tech-savvy people who don’t need all of the advanced features and functions built into Apple’s most current tablets, the iPad 9th Generation is the perfect “starter tablet.”

This version of the iPad features a 10.2 inch Retina display that offers 2,160 x 1,620 pixel resolution. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner used to unlock the device and authorize online purchases. The front of the tablet includes a 12MP ultra-wide camera (for video calling), while the 8MP rear-camera can capture still photos or videos at up to 1080p resolution.

This is an older version of the iPad (and Apple’s least expensive model). Choose between a space gray or silver casing and between 64GB or 256GB of storage. At the time of purchase, you much also choose between a Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + cellular option. It runs using the older Apple A13 Bionic processor.

For a limited time, the iPad 9th Generation is on sale from Amazon, with a starting price of just $249. That’s 24% off its usual price.

Apple iPad 10th Generation (64GB, Wi-Fi only): $300 (save 14%)

Apple iPad (10th Generation)

Amazon

The iPad 10th Generation is slightly more powerful than the 9th Generation version of Apple’s “starter” tablet. It’s suitable for younger users, as well as middle and high school students, or anyone not looking to spend a fortune on an iPad.

The iPad 10th Generation has a 10 inch Liquid Retina display. Like all iPads, it’s powered using a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 10 hours. This model is available in your choice of four casing colors — silver, blue, pink or yellow. The base model comes with 64GB of storage, but at the time of purchase, you can upgrade this to 256GB. You can also choose between a Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + cellular model.

Compared to the iPad 9th Generation, this model is powered using Apple’s slightly faster and more powerful A15 Bionic processor. It also supports Wi-Fi 6 and comes with a 12MP front and rear facing camera.

During Amazon’s Prime Day sale, this tablet’s price has been reduced by 14%, so you can buy it for a starting price of just $300.

Apple 2024 11″ iPad Air (M2 processor, 128GB, Wi-Fi only): $559 (save 7%)

2024 Apple 11

Amazon

Released this past May, the new lineup of Apple iPad Air tablets are the thinnest and lightest yet. You can choose between one with an 11-inch Liquid Retina display (offering 2,360 x 1,640 pixel resolution), or a 13-inch Liquid Retina display. The base model comes equipped with 128GB of storage, but at the time of purchase, this can be upgraded to 256GB, 512GB or 1TB.

Both a Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + Cellular version of the iPad Air is available. It comes in your choice of a light blue, purple, space gray or starlight casing. The tablet is equipped with a 12MP front- and rear-facing camera. And it supports Wi-Fi 6E for wireless connectivity.

With a starting price of just $559, now that it’s on sale during Amazon Prime Day, the 11-inch iPad Air is a robust little powerhouse that runs using Apple’s M2 processor. This makes it considerably faster and better performing than the iPad 9th Generation or iPad 10th Generation. It’s a really great option for anyone looking for a powerful and sleek general purpose tablet.

The 11-inch iPad Air measures just 9.74 x 7.02 x 0.24 inches and weighs a mere 1.02 pounds. Battery life is up to 10 hours.

Apple 2024 13″ iPad Air (M2 processor, 128GB, Wi-Fi only): $738 (8% off)

Apple 2024 13

Amazon

The 2024 13-inch iPad Air features everything people love about the 11-inch iPad Air, but with a larger Liquid Retina touchscreen display. The larger screen makes it perfect for multitasking. The larger screen is also ideal for streaming TV shows and movies, editing photos or video, or performing tasks that require extra on-screen real estate.

This version of the iPad is powered using Apple’s M2 processor. The base model comes with 128GB of storage, but you can upgrade this to 256GB, 512GB or 1TB at the time of purchase. Choose between a light blue, purple, space gray or starlight casing color and between a Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + cellular configuration.

The 13-inch iPad Air also comes equipped with a 12MP front- and rear-facing camera and supports Wi-Fi 6E for wireless connectivity. Battery life is up to 10 hours. This larger size version of the tablet is still very lightweight and thin. It measures 11.04 x 8.46 x 0.24 inches and weighs just 1.26 pounds.

We recommend the iPad Air to anyone who wants a powerful, slim and versatile, general purpose tablet.

Apple 2024 11″ iPad Pro (M4 processor, 256GB, Wi-Fi only, Standard glass): $919 (8% off)

Apple 2024 11

Amazon

At the same time Apple upgraded its lineup of iPad Air tablets, it also gave a major overhaul to the premium iPad Pro models. Both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro tablets now feature a stunning Ultra Retina XDR display (with a 2,420 x 1,669 pixel resolution). This is the brightest and most detailed display ever offered in an iPad.

The iPad Pro is powered using Apple’s premier M4 processor. The base model comes equipped with 256GB of storage, but you can upgrade this to 512GB, 1TB or 2TB at the time of purchase. You can also choose between a silver or space black casing.

The front and rear of the tablet are equipped with a 12MP camera, but the rear of the device also has an integrated LiDAR scanner (used for augmented reality and certain other specialized applications). The iPad Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E for wireless connectivity and also comes in a Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + cellular configuration.

This is the tablet you want in your hands when performing higher-end tasks that require extra processing power — like photo or video editing, working with massive spreadsheets, gaming or doing any type of content creation. At the time of purchase, if you upgrade the iPad Pro to a 1TB or 2TB configuration, you’re also given the chance to upgrade the display to utilize Apple’s new nano-texture glass. This increases the vibrancy and detail of what you see on the touchscreen, while reducing glare.

Now that the latest iPad Pro is on sale during Amazon’s Prime Day sale, it’s well worth upgrading your tablet to this high-end model. The iPad Pro allows you to experience all of the best functionality and highest level of performance that an iPad has to offer.

Apple 2024 13″ iPad Pro (M4 processor, 256GB, Wi-Fi only, standard glass): $1,198 (8% off)

Hands down, the 13-inch version of the 2024 iPad Pro is the most powerful tablet that Apple has ever released. When you use it with the newly redesigned Apple Magic Keyboard (now on sale for $339) and Apple Pencil Pro (now on sale for $119), the tablet rivals what’s possible using an Apple MacBook Pro laptop.

The larger size touchscreen is perfect for multitasking or running apps that require extra screen space. Plus, the performance of this tablet is lighting fast and extremely efficient, thanks to the new M4 processor.

The iPad Pro is ideal for handling tasks that require lots of computing power, like editing 4K (or even 8K) video, editing high-resolution photos, doing any sort of graphic arts or computer aided design (CAD) work, managing advanced spreadsheets, experiencing high-end games and so much more. Plus, the display makes TV shows and movies look absolutely amazing, especially when you upgrade to Apple’s nano-texture glass for the display.

The iPad Pro offers all-day battery life (up to 10 hours) and supports Wi-Fi 6E for wireless connectivity. It also comes in your choice of a space black or silver casing. Amazon Prime Day is the ideal time up purchase this high-end tablet, since you’ll save some serious cash.

Be sure to check out our hands-on iPad Pro review to discover everything our in-house tech experts love about this latest tablet. And if you’re wondering how the Apple 2024 13-inch iPad Pro stacks up against the top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra tablet, we’ve done an in-depth comparison between these two devices.

Apple iPad Mini 6th Generation (A15 Bionic processor, 64GB, Wi-Fi only): $380 (save 24%)

Apple iPad Mini (6th Generation)

Amazon

Powered by the older Apple A15 Bionic processor, the iPad Mini tablet hasn’t been updated since 2021. However, people still love this model because of its compact size. You get all of the features and functionality of an iPad, but it comes with a smaller 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display that features 2,266 by 1,488 pixel resolution.

The iPad Mini also includes a 12MP front- and rear-facing camera and has a built in fingerprint (TouchID) scanner that’s used to unlock the device or authorize an online purchase.

The most appealing thing about the iPad Mini is that it measures just 7.69 x 5.3 x 0.25 inches and weighs 0.65 pounds. This makes in comfortable to hold in your hands for extended periods.

People who enjoy reading e-books love the iPad Mini, since it’s able to display the content of a book (or graphic novel) in full color and the tablet is light enough to hold in one hand while reading. Thanks to its smaller size, the iPad Mini is also more convenient to carry around. And you still get up to a 10 hour battery life per charge.

For a limited time, Amazon has slashed the price of the iPad Mini by 6%, which brings its starting price down to an affordable $380.

Must-have iPad accessories

Based on how you plan to use your new iPad, we highly recommend investing in the Apple Pencil stylus, so you can handwrite or draw directly on the tablet’s display. This allows you to perform tasks like annotate PDF files or use the tablet as a digital notepad. Depending on which iPad model you choose, there are several Apple Pencil models to choose from.

Apple Pencil Pro: $119 (save 8%)

Apple Pencil Pro stylus

Amazon

Compatible with the 2024 Apple iPad Air and iPad Pro tablets, the redesigned Apple Pencil allows you to handwrite, draw or annotate directly on the tablet’s display. This makes the iPad a powerful and versatile note taking, drawing, photo editing and graphic design tool.

This new Apple Pencil now features pixel-perfect precision, tilt and pressure sensitivity and extremely low latency. It automatically charges when attached to a compatible iPad using magnets. We love the new Apple Pencil Pro because it’s ergonomically designed and comfortable to work with. It’s shaped like a pencil and weighs just 0.68 ounces.

Using this version on the Apple Pencil, you can use gestures like squeeze and barrel roll to access tools, change brushes and create strokes. Plus, haptics allow you to feel shapes snap into place and more. You can also use the hover feature to preview your mark before you make it.

Depending on how you plan to use your new iPad, the Apple Pencil Pro can greatly expand the ways you can precisely interact with the tablet.

Apple Pencil (USB-C): $70 (11% off)

Apple Pencil (USB-C) stylus

Amazon

The Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible with almost all current versions of the iPad. It offers a high-level of precision, tilt sensitivity and low latency, but lacks many of the other features now integrated into the Apple Pencil Pro.

Yet, if you want to transform your iPad into a powerful note taking device, this version of the Apple Pencil is an affordable way to do it.

Head over to Amazon right now to purchase the Apple Pencil (USB-C) for 11% off. For a limited time, you’ll pay just $70.

Keyboards, cases and more…

If you want your iPad to perform more like a laptop, we recommend using it with an Apple Magic Keyboard. There’s a different version of this keyboard for each iPad model, but all allow you to easily touch-type with greater speed and accuracy. All of these keyboards also serve as a protective cover for the tablet when it’s not being used.

Pitaka iPad Pro cover
Optional Pitaka iPad Pro adjustable cover and stand.

Pitaka

But if you don’t opt to invest in a keyboard for your iPad, we suggest you purchase a Smart Cover for it. There are several styles to choose from, but all protect the tablet’s display during transit and double as an adjustable tabletop stand.

To help you select all of the right accessories for your iPad, check out our coverage of the 12 best Apple iPad accessories in 2024.

We’re fans of the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) wireless earbuds ($170)  and the Pitaka Magnetic Folio Case for iPad ($48), but you have plenty of other accessory options to choose from.

During the Amazon Prime Day 2024 sale, you’ll find many of the most popular iPad cases, covers and accessories on sale. When choosing accessories, make sure you purchase the version that’s designed for your specific iPad model and screen size.

Boeing workers going on strike after overwhelming vote to reject contract offer and walk off the job

Avatar

Published

on

Seattle — Machinists at Boeing voted Thursday to go on strike, another setback for the giant aircraft maker whose reputation and finances have been battered and now faces a shutdown in production of its best-selling airline planes.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said its members rejected a contract that would have raised pay 25% over four years, then voted 94.6% to reject the contract and voted 96% to strike. A two-thirds vote among 33,000 workers was needed to strike.

“This is about respect, this is about the past, and this is about fighting for our future,” IAM District 751 President Jon Holden said in announcing the vote.

Very little has gone right for Boeing this year, from a panel blowing out and leaving a gaping hole in one of its passenger jets in January to NASA leaving two astronauts in space rather sending them home on a problem-plagued Boeing spacecraft.

As long as the strike lasts, it will deprive Boeing of much-needed cash that it gets from delivering new planes to airlines. That will be another challenge for new CEO Kelly Ortberg, who six weeks ago was given the job of turning around a company that has lost more than $25 billion in the last six years and fallen behind European rival Airbus.

Ortberg warned machinists that a strike vote would put Boeing’s recovery in jeopardy and raise more doubt about the company in the eyes of its airline customers.

Workers were in no mood to listen.

Ortberg made a last-ditch effort to avert a strike, telling machinists Wednesday that “no one wins” in a walkout.

“For Boeing, it is no secret that our business is in a difficult period, in part due to our own mistakes in the past,” he said. “Working together, I know that we can get back on track, but a strike would put our shared recovery in jeopardy, further eroding trust with our customers and hurting our ability to determine our future together.”

Many union members have posted complaints about the deal all week on social media. On Thursday, several dozen blew whistles, banged drums and held up signs calling for a strike as they marched to a union hall near Boeing’s 737 Max plant in Renton, Washington.

“As you can see, the solidarity is here,” said Chase Sparkman, a quality-assurance worker. “I’m expecting my union brothers and sisters to stand shoulder to shoulder, arm in arm, and let our company know that, hey, we deserve more.”

The machinists make $75,608 per year on average, not counting overtime, and that would rise to $106,350 at the end of the four-year contract, according to Boeing.

However, the deal fell short of the union’s initial demand for pay raises of 40% over three years. The union also wanted to restore traditional pensions that were axed a decade ago but settled for an increase in Boeing contributions to employee’s 401(k) retirement accounts.

Although the bargaining committee that negotiated the contract recommended ratification, Holden predicted earlier this week that workers would vote to strike.

Boeing worker Adam Vogel called the 25% raise “a load of crap. We haven’t had a raise in 16 years.”

Broderick Conway, another quality-assurance worker and 16-year Boeing employee, said the company can afford more.

“A lot of the members are pretty upset about our first offer. We’re hoping that the second offer is what we’re looking for,” he said. “If not … we’re going to keep striking and stand up for ourselves.”

The head of Boeing’s commercial-airplanes business, Stephanie Pope, tried earlier this week to discourage workers from thinking a strike would result in a better offer.

“We bargained in absolute good faith with the IAM team that represents you and your interests,” she said. “Let me be clear: We did not hold back with an eye on a second vote.”

Voting began at 5 a.m. local time at union halls in Washington state, Portland, Oregon, and a smattering of other locations.

A strike would stop production of the 737 Max, the company’s best-selling airliner, along with the 777 or “triple-seven” jet and the 767 cargo plane at factories in Everett and Renton, Washington, near Seattle. It likely would not affect Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are built by nonunion workers in South Carolina.

TD Cowen aerospace analyst Cai von Rumohr said it is realistic based on the history of strikes at Boeing to figure that a walkout would last into mid-November, when workers’ $150 weekly payments from the union’s strike fund might seem low going into the holidays.

A strike that long would cost Boeing up to $3.5 billion in cash flow because the company gets about 60% of the sale price when it delivers a plane to the buyer, von Rumohr said.

Union negotiators unanimously recommended that workers approve the tentative contract reached over the weekend.

Boeing promised to build its next new plane in the Puget Sound area. That plane – not expected until sometime in the 2030s – would replace the 737 Max. That was a key win for union leaders, who want to avoid a repeat of Boeing moving production of Dreamliners from Everett to South Carolina.

Holden told members Monday the union got everything it could in bargaining and recommended approval of the deal “because we can’t guarantee we can achieve more in a strike.”

Many union members, however, are still bitter about previous concessions on pensions, health care and pay.

“They are upset. They have a lot of things they want. I think Boeing understands that and wants to satisfy a fair number of them,” said von Rumohr, the aerospace analyst. “The question is, are they going to do enough?”

Boeing has seen its reputation battered since two 737 Max airliners crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people. The safety of its products came under renewed scrutiny after a panel blew out of a Max during a flight in January.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa leaves field with concussion after collision with Bills’ Damar Hamlin

Avatar

Published

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out of Thursday night’s game with the Buffalo Bills because of a concussion after colliding with defensive back Damar Hamlin and hitting the back of his head against the turf.

Tagovailoa, who has a history of dealing with head injuries, remained down for about two minutes before getting to his feet and walking to the sideline after the play in the third quarter. He made his way to the tunnel not long afterward, looking into the stands, appeared to smile and departed for the locker room.

The Dolphins needed almost no time before announcing it was a concussion.

Tagovailoa, who sustained multiple concussions his first three NFL seasons, positioned himself for a big pay bump with an injury-free and productive 2023. He threw for 29 touchdowns and a league-best 4,624 yards.

He signed a four-year, $212 million extension before this season and was the NFL’s leading passer in Week 1 this season. Tagovailoa left the game with the Dolphins trailing 31-10, which held as the final score.

Tagovailoa was hurt on a fourth-down keeper with about 4:30 left in the third. He went straight ahead into Hamlin and did not slide, leading with his right shoulder instead.

He wound up on his back, both his hands in the air and Bills players immediately pointed at Tagovailoa as if to suggest there was an injury. Dolphins center Aaron Brewer quickly did the same, waving to the sideline.

Tagovailoa eventually got to his feet. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel grabbed the side of his quarterback’s head and gave him a kiss on the cheek as Tagovailoa departed. Skylar Thompson came into the game to take Tagovailoa’s spot.

Hamlin was the player who suffered a cardiac arrest after making a tackle during a Monday night game in January 2023 at Cincinnati, causing the NFL to suspend a pivotal game that quickly lost significance in the aftermath of a scary scene that unfolded in front of a national television audience.

Tagovailoa’s history with concussions — and how he has since worked to avoid them — is a huge part of the story of his career, and now comes to the forefront once again.

He had at least two concussions during the 2022 season. He was hurt in a Week 3 game against Buffalo and cleared concussion protocol, though he appeared disoriented on that play but returned to the game.

The NFL later changed its concussion protocol to mandate that if a player shows possible concussion symptoms — including a lack of balance or stability — he must sit out the rest of the game.

Less than a week later, in a Thursday night game at Cincinnati, Tagovailoa was concussed on a scary hit that briefly knocked him unconscious and led to him being taken off the field on a stretcher.

His second known concussion of that season came in a December game against Green Bay, and he didn’t play for the rest of the 2022 season.

Going into last season, Tagovailoa added muscle and spent time studying jiu-jitsu in an effort to learn how to fall more safely and try to protect himself against further injury.
