ST PAUL, Minn. — As festival-goers pack their sunscreen for the inaugural Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, rock fans will also have to brace for the news that The Black Crowes will not be performing Friday.

In a post on the festival’s X account, organizers said Thursday night that the last-minute cancellation was because of illness in the band.

Nevertheless, the show will go on with Alanis Morissette headlining Friday night, preceded by The Head & The Heart, Gwen Stefani, local band Gully Boys and others. Saturday’s festival attendees will see The Offspring, Gary Clark Jr. and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others.

The Minnesota Yacht Club Festival has not shared whether attendees will be eligible for any kind of partial refund.

Fire destroys well-known bar-restaurant in Battle Lake

Emergency officials say Stubs and the Gunpowder Bar appear to be a total loss after Monday night’s fire, which took at least eight fire departments to knock down.

BATTLE LAKE, Minn. — Restaurants are frequently the heartbeat of communities in Minnesota’s lake country, places that draw both locals and visitors to eat, drink, and catch up.

For 55 years, Stub’s has served that role in Battle Lake, a long run that may be over following a raging fire Monday night.

Battle Lake Police Chief Eric Dison says he and a handful of units from the Battle Lake FD responded just before 9:30 p.m. on reports of smoke billowing from the roof of Stub’s Dining & Gunpowder Bar, and it was clear more help would be needed. Battle Lake firefighters quickly requested a ladder truck from nearby Fergus Falls, and then another from Perham as flames began leaping through the roof.

Eventually, units from seven communities outside Battle Lake arrived with engines and crews to battle the blaze. Dison says water was sourced both from the city’s municipal system and Battle Lake itself using portable pumps. The police chief was impressed at the coordination of resources and manpower during the firefight.

“This one couldn’t have gone any better,” Dilson said.

While it’s not official, Dilson believes the building will be declared a total loss due to the collapse of the ceiling and extensive fire and water damage. He says the State Fire Marshal’s Office is on scene working with Battle Lake investigators to determine how the fire started.

The business was closed Monday night, which is common for bars and restaurants in lake country so owners and staff get at least one day off.

Stub’s website says the bar-restaurant was born In 1968 when Stub Digre put $100 down on an farming implement dealership that had closed and started laying out his plans for a supper club. After a total remodel and the installation of kitchen equipment, Stub’s Dining Hall & Saloon officially opened its doors in August of 1969.

As the business changed hands and evolved, Stub’s added an event space and a piano bar, billing it as “Second Best Restaurant in Minnesota.”

Woman charged with murder in hit-and-run death of 16-year-old

Prosecutors say 22-year-old Latalia Anjolie Margalli purposely drove into a crowd of people, some who were on the ground, killing 16-year-old De’Miaya Broome.

MINNEAPOLIS — A 22-year-old Minneapolis woman could face decades in prison after prosecutors charged her with murder in connection with a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a teenager.

Prosecutors on Tuesday detailed one count of second-degree murder and five counts of second-degree assault against Latalia Anjolie Margalli in connection with the incident, which took place in downtown Minneapolis early Saturday.

The criminal complaint filed against Margalli says she and some friends were in the vicinity of 5th and Hennepin when the defendant saw a man she knew and started to argue with him. A group that included 16-year-old De’Miaya Broome soon became involved, telling Margalli to leave the man alone.

A witness who was with the defendant told investigators that the situation escalated into a physical fight between some of the women and that Margalli returned to her vehicle after one of the combatants sprayed mace. The witness claimed that the women in the opposing group began taunting them for leaving the fight and the altercation flared again. At that point, the witness said, Margalli climbed into her SUV and drove directly into the group.

Another witness not involved in the confrontation told police he saw the defendant’s vehicle strike the crowd, and that she “didn’t hit her brakes or nothing.”

Court documents say video recovered from the scene shows Margalli throwing her vehicle in reverse and accelerating so suddenly she knocked her passenger to the ground with an open door. Prosecutors say she then put the SUV into drive and accelerated going the wrong way down 5th Street, directly at Broome, who was on the ground fighting with someone. The defendant then reportedly fled the scene.

Broome suffered critical injuries and was declared dead at the hospital. Five others suffered injuries ranging from broken legs to a head injury.

Responding officers were able to locate Margalli’s vehicle and took her into custody, where she remains.

On Monday, Broome’s parents told KARE 11’s Lou Raguse that she was raised going to church, and loved art, poetry and all animals.
