CLARKFIELD, Minn. — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal (BCA) is investigating an incident in Yellow Medicine County after a suspect shot at law enforcement on Saturday night. 

According to information from the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff, the office got a call around 3:15 p.m. for a welfare check on a person in Clarkfield, a city around 2 and 1/2 hours west of Minneapolis. Deputies learned the person had left the city while en route to the call and were told he was in a farm field with a rifle. 

As deputies were evacuating people from the home next to the field, officials said the suspect pointed the rifle at them and then fled into the home. Officials said officers set up a perimeter around the house and deputies tried to contact the man. 

Officers were not able to convince the man to leave the house and called a SWAT team as backup. The Kandiyohi-Meeker-Willmar SWAT team arrived and they tried to convince the man to leave the house. During the standoff, officials said the man fired a long gun at the team and SWAT returned fire. 

The man was struck in the leg, officials said. 

After eight hours on site, the SWAT team was relieved by another crew from West Central SWAT and BLR SWAT.

Around 6:15 on Sunday morning, the man left the house and shot a long gun at the SWAT team. One of the team returned fire and struck him. 

The extent of the man’s injuries has not been released as of Sunday afternoon, but officials said the team gave the man medical attention and was taken to Hennepin Healthcare via Air Ambulance. He is in stable condition, according to officials. 

No other people were injured in this incident, officials said. 

The BCA was asked to investigate the use of force by officers.

SHOREVIEW, Minn. — At least one person was taken to the hospital overnight after a crash near Shoreview. 

Information form authorities is sparse as of Sunday morning, but according to officials with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of a vehicle was taken to the hospital by medics and had both legs amputated. 

State Patrol is doing reconstruction of the crash on Sunday morning and the Ramsey County Sheriff is investigating.

MINNEAPOLIS — You’d expect Minneapolis to be busy this weekend. After all, the Vikings are at home for the first time this season.

While thousands will make their way to U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, thousands also showed up outside the stadium for a different kind of roar.

“Just from feeling the intensity, the noise, and I honestly called my father right away and told him I want to go check out a race,” Branden Fourre said.

Fourre is one of the thousands at the Red Bull Showrun, a display of multiple types of motorsports, including Formula 1.

“It is really loud,” Mei Huynh said. “I see it on TV all the time, but I didn’t think that it was going to be like that, like, ears splitting loud.”

Many fans we spoke with Saturday were at the Showrun to see a Formula One car in person, driven by former F1 driver David Coulthard. Coulthard now works as a presenter and commentator and drives the V10 engine RB7 F1 car.

With so much hype growing around Formula One, especially here in the United States, we had to ask – does Coulthard think another race could be added, and could it be in Minnesota?

“America understands show,” Coulthard said, laughing.

“I don’t see why not, the reaction has been very positive,” he added. “In Europe, we race pretty close to each other in terms of distance between the racetracks. So all of this goes to show that you put on the event, there’s enthusiasm for people to turn up and give up their weekend.”

Saturday’s display was fun for fans who’ve loved the sport for years – and those just getting started.

“America is well served in amazing sports,” Coulthard said. “There is room for Formula One, we’re growing in this country and we really, really appreciate it.”
