An expert shared tips on insurance and retirement plans going into 2025.

You might know what benefits your job offers, but do you know how to make the most of them?

Stacy Kupsky, vice president of Wayzata Bay Private Wealth Management, visited KARE 11 News at Noon to share more about open enrollment for insurance plans, among other benefits.

Some of the things Kupsky discusses with clients are employer retirement accounts and benefits. The Wayzata Bay Private Wealth Management advises you to make financial decisions in the last quarter of the year so you can set the tone for the next.

If you’re wondering how much you should save for retirement in your 401k plan, Kupsky said the minimum should be the employer match.

If you’re just starting to save, you can set it to automatically increase every year so that you reach your goal.

As for health insurance, Wayzata Bay Private Wealth Management advised clients to think of a few questions, such as: How is your health? Are you adding kids or are they rolling off your insurance?

More charges filed against man accused in encampment shootings

In total, Joshua Jones faces two counts of murder and three of attempted murder, along with three counts of illegal firearms possession.

MINNEAPOLIS — Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty filed additional charges Monday against a man accused of killing two people in separate shootings earlier this month.

A statement from Moriarty’s office said prosecutors charged 36-year-old Joshua Jones with three additional counts, adding one of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder to their initial charging decision. In total, Jones faces two and three counts of each, respectively, as well as three counts of illegal firearms possession.

Monday’s announcement came after further investigation into the Sept. 18 shootings, in which the attorney’s office accused Jones of shooting four individuals and attempting to shoot another in at least three separate attacks near encampments for the unhoused. Minneapolis police said Jones was arrested a short time after a man was shot in the south Minneapolis Phillips neighborhood. Investigators said another deadly shooting had occurred just blocks away about 12 hours earlier.

“These attacks were horrific and have left gaping holes in the lives of the loved ones who lost people for whom they cared deeply,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “We promise to do everything we can to hold Mr. Jones accountable and provide those who are hurting with any support they need during the grieving process.”

According to the timeline of events provided by Moriarty’s office, prosecutors claim Jones’ first alleged shooting happened at an encampment on the 2500 block of 17th Avenue South around 4:39 a.m. The county attorney said Jones shot two men, one of whom died at the scene, while the other was taken to the hospital. Jones allegedly shot at a third person but missed.

At 4:21 p.m., prosecutors said Jones was seen on surveillance video on the 2500 block of Bloomington Avenue walking up to a man in an alley before shooting and killing him.

The timeline goes on to say Jones allegedly approached a fifth victim around 7:20 p.m. at 24th Street and 18th Avenue South, shooting at him and missing. Prosecutors said Jones chased after the man when he fled, eventually shooting him in the shoulder.

Authorities arrested Jones about 10 minutes after the last known shooting in the area of the third crime scene.

At the time of his arrest, the attorney’s office said law enforcement already had a warrant for Jones’ arrest, stemming from another hooting in March.

Jones is currently in custody at the Hennepin County Jail. His next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 24.

Sheriff’s officials identified the victim as a 21-year-old from the Netherlands, while the driver of the UTV was evacuated by air ambulance with serious injuries.

URBANK, Minnesota — A UTV rollover crash in west-central Minnesota has claimed the life of a young man from the Netherlands.

Otter Tail County sheriff’s officials say 21-year-old Jim Jan was a passenger in the UTV that crashed just after 9:15 a.m. Sunday near the community of Urbank. Responding deputies found that Jan was thrown from the vehicle during the rollover crash, and the UTV then landed on him. Other people on the scene attempted to remove the side-by-side UTV from the victim but were unable to.

Jan was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 43-year-old driver of the UTV was evacuated by air ambulance after suffering serious injuries. His condition is currently unknown.

Otter Tail County investigators are looking into the cause of the crash.

Urbank is located about 40 miles southeast of Fergus Falls.

The winner has one year from the drawing date to claim their prize at lottery headquarters in Roseville and can choose to remain anonymous.

EDINA, Minn. — One lucky player may or may not already know they’re sitting on a $2 million Mega Millions lottery ticket.

According to the Minnesota Lottery, the ticket was sold at a Holiday Stationstore in Edina for the Sept. 27 drawing. The organization said the ticket matched the first five winning numbers — worth $1 million.

But the fun didn’t stop there – because the player added the Megaplier option, the winnings were multiplied by the Megaplier number drawn (2), doubling their earnings.

The winner has one year from the drawing date to claim their prize at lottery headquarters in Roseville. Unless they choose to be named publicly, Minnesota law states anyone who wins more than $10,000 has the option to remain anonymous.

The next drawing takes place Tuesday, Oct. 1. The jackpot is estimated to be worth $93 million.
