Treating separation anxiety in dogs
Kathryn Newman from Augusta Dog Training joined KARE 11 Saturday to offer some advice.
LONG LAKE, Minn — Separation anxiety can be one of the most challenging behavioral problems in dogs.
Kathryn Newman from Augusta Dog Training joined KARE 11 Saturday to offer some advice.
Newman said dogs with separation anxiety were never taught that it is OK to be left alone.
She believes owners need to teach their dogs that it is normal to be left alone.
Newman said owners should train and socialize their dogs to build confidence.
The dog should also get enough exercise.
The third objective is learning the importance of the dog’s crate. It creates physical separation from the owner while the owner is at home.
Crate tips:
- Don’t let the puppy or new dog sleep in your bedroom (8 hours of separation and it’s not forever).
- If you need to, slowly remove the crate from the bedroom by degrees.
- Crate your dog for three 40 – 60 minute quiet times per day.
Newman adds that pharmaceuticals should be used in combination with quality behavioral modification practices.
Augusta Dog Training has three locations in Long Lake, Edina and Burnsville.
