Nelson’s son confirmed for a Twin Cities newspaper that Prince’s only full sibling has died.

MINNEAPOLIS — The woman considered the only full sibling of Prince has died, according to family and multiple media reports.

Tyka Nelson was a music writer and performer who died at the age of 64. Her son President Nelson told the Star Tribune his mother passed Monday morning but did not share details. Tyka Nelson’s cousin Charles “Chazz” Smith paid tribute to her in a Facebook post.

“Our family is very saddened to share the news of my cousin Tyka Evene Nelson who passed away this morning,” he wrote.

Tyka and Minneapolis music legend Prince Rogers Nelson were the only children from the marriage of John L. Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw Baker. The two had five half-siblings who all became involved to some extent in a legal battle that followed Prince’s death. In May 2017, Carver County District Judge Kevin Eide ruled that Nelson and her half-siblings would split the assets Prince left behind when he died of an accidental opioid overdose.

Tyka Nelson was heavily involved in maintaining Prince’s legacy, helping to move his recording studio and late night concert venue Paisley Park from a private space to a museum dedicated to her brother’s life and artistry.

Police say the teens were in a home with other juveniles and two adults Tuesday morning when a gun went off and a boy was killed.

MINNEAPOLIS — A 13-year-old boy is dead after what appears to be an accidental shooting early Tuesday in Minneapolis.

Police said squads were sent to a home on the 2400 block of Ferrant Place around 1:30 a.m. on reports of a shooting. Officers located a 13-year-old inside the residence who had been shot. Despite lifesaving efforts the boy was declared dead on the scene.

Investigators were told a 14-year-old boy was handling a gun when it discharged, fatally striking the other teen. There were additional juveniles and two adult women in the home when the incident occurred – none of them were struck or injured.

“The death of a child is always incredibly troubling and tragic,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara in a released statement. “Our investigators will work diligently to answer the many questions we have. In addition to supporting the families that are impacted by this tragedy, everyone must make every effort to ensure that every gun is securely stored.”

The 14-year-old was on scene when officers arrived and was promptly taken into custody. He is being held at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center awaiting possible charges.

A man called 911 around 7:30 p.m. Monday claiming he shot a man after he was assaulted in his car.

ST PAUL, Minn. — The St. Paul Police Department (SPPD) homicide unit is investigating a shooting that left one person dead in the city’s North End neighborhood Monday night, and interviewing the man who likely pulled the trigger.

Squads were dispatched to the 500 block of Front Ave. at 7:30 p.m. after a 911 caller said he was assaulted in his vehicle and shot at the man responsible. The alleged attacker got into a red vehicle and drove away, according to the caller.

Shortly afterward, a red vehicle crashed two miles away at E. 12th and Cedar Streets. SPPD officers reported finding a man in the car suffering from a gunshot injury, unconscious and not breathing.

Officers and Good Samaritans attempted lifesaving measures but the man died at the scene. SPPD’s homicide unit is investigating the incident and speaking with the 911 caller to determine what occurred.

At this point, it is unclear whether the alleged assault victim had a permit to carry a weapon.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the victim and his cause of death after an autopsy is completed and the family notified.
