Police investigate body found at south Indianapolis gym
Family told 13News that 39-year-old Derek Sink visited a tanning bed on Friday and was found dead there this Monday morning.
INDIANAPOLIS — Police are conducting death investigation at a south Indianapolis gym after a man was found dead in a tanning bed Monday morning.
A sign on the door of the Planet Fitness on Hardegan Street Monday afternoon said “tanning is currently unavailable.”
Family confirmed to 13News that 39-year-old Derek Sink went into a tanning bed on Friday and was found dead there Monday morning. They said Sink struggled with drugs and a needle was found in the room with him.
The cause of Sink’s death has not yet been determined.
Sink’s aunt said they reported him missing on Friday. She said he was wearing an ankle monitor that helped investigators determine he never left the gym.
A woman who was at Planet Fitness that morning, before law enforcement showed up, said she and other members noticed a foul smell in the building that got worse near the tanning rooms. Now she said she’s wondering how something like this could happen.
“The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?” said Elizabeth Len.
Sink’s family called him a loving person. They said they hope to see stricter policies on cleaning and an end-of-day checklist for staff to prevent this from happening again.
13News reached out to IMPD and Planet Fitness. Police could only confirm they were investigating a death at that location and did not elaborate on the circumstances.
A spokesperson for Planet Fitness said they’re looking into what happened with the local franchise owner.

Historic Minneapolis library to reopen after renovations
Named after a 19th century civil rights advocate and abolitionist, Sumner Library has served the community since 1915.
MINNEAPOLIS — A north Minneapolis library listed on the National Register of Historic Places is set to reopen next week after undergoing a nearly $7 million renovation.
Named after Charles Sumner, a 19th century civil rights advocate and abolitionist, Sumner Library has served the community since 1915. It closed its doors on Oct 7, 2023, for renovations.
Hennepin County Library Director Scott Duimstra said he is looking forward to the reopening. While some upgrades were made to the library, Duimstra noted that the building’s original framework and historic details have been preserved.
“When you walk through, you have these historic-looking wood bookshelves throughout the space. As a bibliophile, a lover of libraries, it just brings joy to my eyes when I see furniture like that,” Duimstra said.
The $6.9 million renovation, funded by taxpayer dollars, has brought various updates to the facility, including a new youth and teen space, larger and more flexible study areas, a dedicated wing for adults and new electrical and HVAC systems.
Summer Mattson, who teaches at an early childhood development center across the street, said she’s eager to bring her students back once the library reopens. “We do not have a library in our school, so the kids and I walk down here and they check out books and look at everything. We talk about the building itself and the kids love it,” Mattson said.
She is looking forward to bringing her class to the library next week. “I already talked to my kids about it, so they know what’s going on and they’re looking forward to it.”
The library’s doors will officially reopen on Tuesday, November 19. To mark the occasion, a public celebration is planned for Sunday, Nov 24.

Checklist to make your car ready for Minnesota winter roads
Ahead of the first cold snap, here are ways to prepare your vehicle.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn — While we are still taking advantage of the fall weather, AAA shares some tips to keep yourself safe when you inevitably have to navigate the unpredictable driving conditions this winter.
“Adding vehicle winterization to this list is an important step to make sure you’re prepared for winter driving and the hazards that come with it”, said Brynna Knapp, spokesperson for AAA, in a news release.
AAA recommends the following checklist for getting your car ready:
- Check or change your tires.
- Get your battery tested.
- Check your headlights.
- Have a professional look at your brakes.
- Check your antifreeze levels.
- Add repellent to your windshield.
Additionally, drivers can keep a winter weather emergency kit in their cars in case they find themselves stuck on the side of the road.
The safety items should include:
- Bag of abrasive material (sand, salt, cat litter) or traction mats
- Ice scraper with brush
- Jumper cables
- Gloves, hats and blankets—enough for everyone who may ride in your car
- First-aid kit
- Snow shovel
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Window washer solvent
- Cloth or roll of paper towels
- Warning devices (flares or triangles)
- Drinking water – fill halfway to prevent from freezing
- Non-perishable snacks (energy or granola bars)
- Extra clothes
- Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)
“No matter how well prepared you and your car are for winter, snow and ice will always pose significant risks. Once the snow starts to fly, budget extra time, take it slow, and keep an eye on traffic conditions in front of you. You’re not invincible and watch out for the driver who thinks that they are,” said Knapp in the news release.
