Segway recalls 220,000 scooters after 20 people are hurt by a technical issue.

Segway is recalling around 220,000 Segway scooters sold nationally because the product’s folding mechanism might break while in operation, providing a fall danger that has resulted in 20 injuries, including broken bones, bruises, and lacerations, the firm said Thursday.

The recall affects all Segway Ninebot Max G3OP and Max G30LP KickScooters, according to a notification released by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Segway, located in Los Angeles, claimed it received 68 complaints of folding mechanism failures, including 20 injuries.

From January 2020 until February 2025, the scooters, manufactured in China and Malaysia, were offered online at Amazon.com and Segway.com, as well as at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart for $600 to $1,000.

The Max G30LP KickScooter is grey with yellow accents, whilst the Max G30P is black with yellow accents. The brand name “ninebot” is displayed on the foot platform and the top of the handlebars.

Consumers should stop using the recalled scooters and contact Segway to see whether the folding mechanism needs to be adjusted and to get a free maintenance kit with tools and instructions for inspecting and tightening the mechanism.

Segway can be reached at 800-914-6110 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, by email at recall@segway.com , or online at https://service.segway.com/recall or www.segway.com â€” click on “Recall Center” at the bottom of the page for more information.

This is not Segway’s first recall. In November, the firm recalled around 1,400 Segway Ninebot P100 KickScooters after receiving 31 complaints of scooters with damaged front forks and six injuries. It also recalled Ninebot Kids bike helmets that did not meet federal safety requirements in March 2022.

Segway has changed ownership many times. Jimi Heselden, a businessman from the United Kingdom, died in a 2010 accident involving a Segway motorized scooter after his engineering firm purchased the company.
