Judge dismisses the Trump administration's plea for extra time to explain why the U of M student visa was withdrawn

MINNEAPOLIS — The Trump administration will not be given more time to explain why a University of Minnesota student was detained by immigration officials in March, a judge ruled.

The student, Dogukan Gunaydin, is a 28-year-old Turkish citizen. He was accepted to the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Business after pleading guilty to drunk driving in 2023. He filed a lawsuit, alleging that the arrest and detention violated his statutory and constitutional rights.

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to explain why the student was detained. A motion for an extension was filed on Friday, but court records appear to show that a judge denied the request.

A Department of Homeland Security official said in a statement last week that Gunaydin’s detention was due to a drunk driving conviction, and that it had nothing to do with political activism on campus, which has sparked concern from the Trump administration. Gunaydin’s attorney has not responded to DHS’s assertion.

Regarding Gunaydin’s loss of student status, his attorney claims that the DHS violated expected procedures by “arresting him before even unlawfully terminating his student status.”
