Millions of people in the United States rely on monthly Social Security payments to help cover their daily expenses. These payments go to senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In April 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is following a clear payment schedule based on a person’s date of birth and the type of benefit they receive.

Who Has Already Been Paid in April?
As of now, three groups of people have already received their Social Security payments for April:
April 1: People who get SSI (Supplemental Security Income).
April 3: People who have been receiving Social Security since before May 1997.
April 9: Retirees whose birthdays fall between the 1st and 10th of any month.
These payments have already been processed by the SSA and deposited into the beneficiaries’ accounts.
Who Will Get Paid Next?
There are still two more payment dates coming up this month. If you didn’t receive your money yet, check your birthday and see where you fit in:
April 16: If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th of any month, you’ll receive your payment on this day.
April 23: If your birthday is between the 21st and 31st of any month, your payment will come on this date.
These dates follow the SSA’s regular rule of paying on Wednesdays, depending on your birth date. If a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it is usually sent out the business day before. For example, if April 1 was a Saturday, the payment would be deposited on Friday, March 28.
If your payment is late, the SSA advises waiting at least three business days before contacting their support.
Big Changes in 2025: Social Security Fairness Act
From January 2025, a new law called the Social Security Fairness Act has brought some important changes. It removed two rules that many people thought were unfair: the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These rules used to lower benefits for public employees such as teachers, police officers, and firefighters who also had pensions outside of Social Security.
Now that these two rules are gone, many people are receiving more money from Social Security.
How Much Extra Are People Getting?
Thanks to this new law, many beneficiaries got retroactive payments (payments for past months) in February and March 2025. Around 1.1 million people received a total of $7.5 billion. That’s an average of $6,710 per person!
Starting from April 2025, monthly Social Security checks are also increasing for many:
Retirees affected by the rule changes: +$360/month
Spouses: +$700/month
Widows: +$1,190/month
These amounts are not the same for everyone and will be added gradually, so don’t worry if you don’t see the full increase right away. The SSA says you should wait to check your updated payment amount after receiving your April deposit.
Some delays may happen because of budget cuts and staff reductions in federal agencies.
