How the Study Was Done
Neighbor.com studied the 100 largest metro areas in the country. They used a mix of surveys, government data, and consumer trends to rank cities. A total of 1,000 Americans were asked what makes a place feel welcoming. The study used six key factors:

- Volunteering
- Charitable Giving
- Population Change
Each city was given a weighted score based on how well it performed in these categories.
1. Madison, Wisconsin – Most Neighborly City in the U.S.
Madison came in first place! It’s known for its massive farmers’ market, lovely outdoor areas, and active community life. With nearly 60% voter turnout in the last mayoral election, residents here really care about shaping their city’s future.
2. Minneapolis, Minnesota – Midwestern Warmth
Minneapolis shows what Midwest hospitality looks like. This city scored high for charitable giving and volunteering. With beautiful lakes, an active arts scene, and top attractions like the Mall of America, it’s a welcoming place to call home.
3. Colorado Springs, Colorado – Volunteers in Action
This city leads the way in volunteering, with 69% of residents involved in local organizations. With stunning mountain views and one of the strongest housing markets in the U.S., it’s both scenic and supportive.
4. Sarasota, Florida – Sunshine and Smiles
Sarasota made its first appearance on this list, thanks to its friendly beach-town vibe and warm weather. It had the highest population growth among the top 25 cities, adding 3.4% more residents in just one year.
5. Rochester, New York – Breaking Stereotypes
People might assume New Yorkers aren’t so friendly, but Rochester proves otherwise. It made the top five for its volunteering and charity efforts.
6–8. Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden – Utah’s Neighborly Trio
Utah is clearly doing something right! Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden all ranked highly. Residents here value volunteering, safety, and community spirit. Provo is also becoming a hub for new businesses, while Salt Lake is known for attracting tech talent.
9. Raleigh, North Carolina – Outdoor Charm
Raleigh offers a strong economy and a friendly atmosphere. The city is growing fast and features over 180 miles of trails, perfect for anyone who loves nature.
10. Richmond, Virginia – A Political Capital With Community Feel
With more than 30,000 new residents moving in between 2020 and 2022, Richmond’s population is growing quickly. It also had one of the highest voter turnouts, showing how engaged locals are.
11–12. Virginia Beach and Seattle – Civic and Charitable Leaders
Virginia Beach stood out for its high voter turnout, while Seattle earned high marks for charitable giving and community work. Seattle’s connection to big tech hasn’t stopped it from being socially active and helpful.
Community Habits Across America
According to the same study, 85% of Americans said they want to stay in their current homes for the long term. This helps strengthen the feeling of togetherness in neighborhoods. Also, 90% plan to attend local events like farmers’ markets, block parties, and sports matches.
But not everything is perfect—40% of people reported that politics have caused tension with neighbors. From lawn signs to online complaints, political opinions are now a bigger part of community life than ever before.
