- Standard Renewal Period: Maryland driver’s licenses are generally valid for up to 8 years for all drivers, including seniors, though some may still be on a 5-year or 6-year renewal cycle as the state phases in the longer period.
- Renewal Notification: The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) sends renewal notices at least 60 days before your license expires.
- Renewal Methods: Seniors can renew their licenses in person, by mail, online, or at self-serve kiosks, depending on eligibility. However, drivers aged 40 and over must meet additional requirements (see below).
Special Requirements for Drivers Age 40 and Older
- Vision Test:
- All drivers age 40 and older must submit proof of a vision test every time they renew their license.
- The vision test can be completed at an MVA office for free, or by an outside ophthalmologist/optometrist who submits the results electronically or via a Vision Screening Form. The test must be performed within 24 months of renewal.
- Written and Road Tests:
- These are not routinely required at renewal for seniors. However, if the MVA has reason to believe there may be impairment, a written or road test may be required.
- Medical Fitness:
- First-time applicants age 70 or older must provide proof of previous satisfactory driving or a physician’s certificate of fitness.
- The MVA may place restrictions (such as requiring corrective lenses) based on test results or medical information.
Real ID Requirement
- As of May 7, 2025, a Real ID-compliant license is required for domestic flights and access to certain federal facilities. Seniors renewing their licenses should bring documents proving age/identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of address.
Renewal After Expiration
- If your license has been expired for over a year, you must pass both the knowledge and skills (road) tests before it can be renewed.
Disability Placards and Plates
- Seniors with impaired mobility can apply for disability parking placards or plates with certification from a medical professional.
