Police in Florida arrested a 29-year-old man after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in her car in Miami.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that the investigation began shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday, when the grandmother of a 3-year-old flagged down a deputy near Southwest 144th Street and Southwest 134th Avenue. The girl had been walking alone through the residential complex. Police say she had dried blood on her face and clothing.

Deputies went to the girl’s house in search of her mother, but she was not present. During a search of the area, cops discovered the mother’s vehicle, which was unresponsive and had obvious stab wounds. Paramedics arrived on the scene and declared the woman, later identified as 24-year-old Maria Camila Garcia-Molina, dead.

Joy Chandra Nath, 29, was arrested by police using “investigative means” on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse.

WTVJ, a local NBC affiliate, obtained an arrest report that provided additional details about the incident. According to the report, deputies discovered Garcia-Molina’s body wrapped in blankets in the passenger seat of her car.

She sustained stab wounds to her neck, torso, and extremities. Deputies believe the girl was with her mother at the time of the murder. The girl told deputies that her mother had been hit in the head and was sleeping, according to the affidavit. The girl did not appear to have been physically injured in the incident.

Garcia-Molina’s family reportedly stated that Nath was her ex-boyfriend, and she had to obtain a restraining order against him because he stalked her. According to the affidavit, Nath and Garcia-Molina’s current boyfriend got into a fight on Friday at a local mall.

Deputies arrested Nath following a traffic stop early Sunday morning. He allegedly had scratches on his face, arms, and neck. Nath was also allegedly in possession of the victim’s belongings, claiming to be on his way to return them. The suspect reportedly told cops that he, Garcia-Molina, and her daughter went to breakfast, and the victim handed him her purse and cell phone.

Nath is still in the Miami-Dade County Jail without bond. According to records, he was released on bond for theft-related charges from last year.
