MINNEAPOLIS — An immigration judge has halted the deportation proceedings of a University of Minnesota student who was detained by immigration officials in March.
According to court documents obtained by KARE 11’s Lou Raguse, Judge Sarah Mazzie ruled that Dogukan Gunaydin, a 28-year-old Turkish citizen, cannot be deported because the DWI case to which he pleaded guilty did not justify his removal. The DHS is appealing the decision.
After Gunaydin was arrested and detained by ICE in late March, protesters rallied on campus to support the popular U of M graduate student.
Gunaydin has been an acclaimed student everywhere he’s gone, from his undergraduate studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield to being chosen to give a youth version of a TedTalk to his acceptance as a STEM MBA candidate at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management.
Gunaydin will remain in the Sherburne County Jail pending his appeal.
