A Wisconsin father was arrested and charged with multiple felonies on Thursday in connection with his teenage daughter’s killing of two people at Abundant Life Christian School last year, according to officials.
Jeffrey Rupnow, 42, was arrested around 3:45 a.m., according to Madison Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Fryer.
Rupnow has been charged with “contributing to the delinquency of a child” and two counts of “providing a dangerous weapon to a person under the age of 18 resulting in death,” according to Fryer. All three charges constitute felonies.
According to Lt. Matt Nordquist of the Madison Police Department, Rupnow legally purchased the firearm used in the shooting in Dane County. His 15-year-old daughter had regular access to a gun safe and several other weapons in the house, according to police.
Nordquist added that Rupnow has cooperated with the investigation.
Natalie Rupnow, 15, shot and killed two people and injured at least six others on December 16, 2024, at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. Police said a “combination of factors” appeared to have contributed to the shooting, but they have not revealed Rupnow’s motive. She died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
One student remains hospitalized nearly five months after the shooting, according to police.
Police determined that the teen shooter was obsessed with mass violence, school shootings, and weapons, though a specific motive may never be revealed.
She kept a journal with drawings and videos depicting mass violence. Police said they tracked her online interactions, which may have fueled her fascination with violence and shootings.
A day after the attack, a judge issued a restraining order against Alexander Paffendorf, a California man who was involved in the shooting. According to officials, Paffendorf and Rupnow had discussed using a gun and explosives to attack a government building. He has not been charged with a crime.
Erin West, 42, and Rubi Vergara, 14, were identified by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office as the victims, who were both teachers and students.
CBS News contacted Abundant Life Christian School for comment on the arrest and charges.
