After more than four decades of serving the Pittsburgh community, the Giant Eagle at Parkway Center is closing its doors for good on June 28, 2025. The closure has left local shoppers and patients concerned, especially with the in-store pharmacy shutting down earlier on May 21. Many residents are now scrambling to find new places to fill prescriptions and buy groceries.
A Familiar Landmark Nears Its Final Days
For many in the area, the Parkway Center Giant Eagle has been more than just a supermarket. It remained a central shopping spot even after the Parkway Center Mall closed in 2013. Locals remember the area as a once-bustling hub of activity, and Giant Eagle was one of the last businesses keeping the space alive.
“It’s our closest store from where I come from,” one regular told KDKA-TV. Another longtime shopper recalled visiting since the days when the mall behind Giant Eagle was still open.
Now, with both the supermarket and its pharmacy closing, the Parkway Center complex faces yet another blow to its already declining activity.
Pharmacy Shutdown Leaves Patients Seeking Alternatives
The in-store pharmacy will stop filling prescriptions after May 21, weeks before the full store closure. This early shutdown is especially troubling for elderly customers and chronic care patients, who may now need to quickly transition their medication services to another provider.
Giant Eagle has said it will help transfer pharmacy services to other nearby locations to reduce the impact on its loyal customers.
Staff Affected but Some Transfers Offered
Giant Eagle confirmed that employees are being offered transfers to other stores. However, some job losses are likely as not all workers will be able to move or find equivalent roles at different locations.
The company thanked its customers in a public statement:
“We appreciate our customers’ loyalty over the past four decades and will work to ensure a smooth transfer of services to our other local stores.”
Redevelopment on the Horizon?
Despite the closures, Pittsburgh Councilmember Theresa Kail-Smith remains hopeful about the future of the site. She acknowledged the deep roots the Giant Eagle location had in the community—her own children once worked and spent time at the Parkway Center.
After meeting with property owner Curtis Kossman, Kail-Smith expressed optimism that the site could soon see new life. Talks of redevelopment plans are already underway, including possibilities for new grocery options, national retailers, or even residential and commercial projects.
“He just mentioned that there are other grocers that are also interested, possibly still Giant Eagle, I don’t know,” she said.
Community Reaction: Sadness and Hope
Locals are saddened by the closure of such a long-standing store, but many are also looking forward to seeing something new take its place. Some compared the Parkway Center’s slow decline to the now mostly vacant Century III Mall.
One resident summed up the mixed feelings, saying, “Once the shelves are clear next door, that emptiness will only grow.”
What Happens Next
Until June 28, the store will continue to operate as normal, including full grocery aisles and checkout service. However, the clock is ticking for patients who rely on the in-store pharmacy, with the May 21 pharmacy closure date fast approaching.
As plans for the location’s future take shape, shoppers and residents will be watching closely to see if a new business can bring back the foot traffic and community activity that Parkway Center once enjoyed.
The closing of the Giant Eagle store and pharmacy at Parkway Center marks the end of an era for many Pittsburgh residents. With prescription access and jobs on the line, the impact is already being felt in the community. However, hope remains high as redevelopment talks begin. City officials and the property owner are working toward bringing in fresh retail or residential projects that better serve today’s needs. For now, the focus remains on supporting affected customers and workers during this major transition.
