JCPenney is closing seven more stores across the US by May 25. Shoppers can enjoy huge markdowns of up to 90% off before the doors shut for good. The closures are part of the chain’s ongoing business changes and not directly related to financial struggles.
Stores Closing Across Seven States
The seven JCPenney stores set to close are located in California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia. These stores will stop operating on or before May 25, giving customers a limited time to shop.
Big Discounts to Shop Now
Before closing, JCPenney is offering major discounts across all departments. Apparel sales start at 40% off and include popular brands and JCPenney’s own private label items. Other discounted categories include:
- Homeware like bedding, rugs, and cookware
- Makeup and skincare products
- Seasonal items like summer gear and decorations
Customers can save even more by using coupons and combining discounts with JCPenney’s mobile app and rewards program.
Why Are These Stores Closing?
JCPenney says these store closures are “isolated” and happen because of lease agreements ending or changes in the market. They are not directly tied to the company’s financial issues.
Retail experts, however, are cautious about the chain’s future. Neil Saunders, a retail analyst, says JCPenney has had some successes but needs to build on them quickly to grow.
Challenges Facing JCPenney and Other Retailers
The rise of online shopping and fewer people visiting malls have hit department stores hard. JCPenney relies heavily on mall locations, but foot traffic has dropped as shoppers prefer online and other options.
Other challenges like high inflation, increased rent, labor costs, and interest rates have made it harder for stores to stay profitable. These factors have led many big retailers to close stores or declare bankruptcy.
Research firm Coresight expects about 15,000 store closures in 2025—double the number from last year.
Other Department Stores Also Closing
JCPenney isn’t alone. Another major department store has announced plans to close 66 more locations, and Macy’s will be shutting down an iconic store in 2024.
JCPenney’s seven store closures mark another chapter in the changing retail world. Shoppers have a short window to grab big bargains before these stores close. As the retail industry faces ongoing challenges, many well-known stores are adjusting by closing locations and offering discounts.
