Police have identified the Las Vegas man who opened fire at a gym before being shot dead by cops after his gun jammed.
Daniel Ortega, 34, killed one person and injured three others last week after entering the Las Vegas Athletic Club and opening fire at around 1:33 p.m. NBC News reported that Ortega fired 24 rounds before his weapon malfunctioned.
Police reported that Ortega entered the business with the rifle and walked past several people leaving the gym. According to police, Ortega approached the front desk and began pacing.
An employee approached Ortega, and they spoke briefly. “The employee fled after the gunman raised his rifle and began shooting, striking him. “The suspect followed the employee deeper into the business and continued to fire rounds,” police said during a press conference.
Ortega eventually returned to the front lobby of the gym, where he continued to fire rounds until his weapon malfunctioned. Police encountered Ortega in the front lobby while responding to a 911 call reporting shots fired. Police said an officer saw Ortega carrying a rifle and fired a round through the glass door at him.
Ortega then fled the business, still carrying the rifle, and two other officers opened fire. Ortega was struck by gunfire and transported to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, where he died.
The person killed in the shooting was identified as Edgar Quinonez, 31, of Las Vegas, according to NBC News. The network stated that the victim had no known connection to Ortega.
Police said Ortega worked out at the gym but gave no explanation for the shooting.
