The city is in mourning as the investigation continues.
What Happened at Young Park?
The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday night at Young Park, a popular recreation spot in Las Cruces where about 200 people had gathered for a music and community event. According to police, multiple firearms were used, and 50 to 60 bullet casings were found at the scene. Many of the injured were likely caught in the crossfire during the chaos.
Victims Identified
Authorities confirmed the identities of the three young victims killed in the shooting:
- Andrew Madrid, 16
- Jason Gomez, 13
- Dominick Estrada, 19
Madrid and Gomez died on the scene, while Estrada passed away later at the hospital. The 15 injured victims include both men and women, ranging in age from 16 to 36. Their names have not been released.
Arrests and Charges
Las Cruces Police announced on Sunday morning that two suspects had been arrested. Tomas Rivas, 20, and a 17-year-old boy were each charged with three open counts of murder. “Open murder” charges allow prosecutors to decide later if the crime was manslaughter or first- or second-degree murder. More charges are expected.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo expressed her heartbreak in a public Instagram post, writing that this kind of tragedy now feels all too common across the country. Her words reflect the shock and grief felt across the community.
Law enforcement is asking the public to share any videos or tips that may help the investigation. The Las Cruces Police Department is being assisted by New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Hospitals and Emergency Response
Gunshot victims were rushed to all three hospitals in Las Cruces, and several were transferred to the University Medical Center of El Paso, a major trauma center. Four patients have been treated and released, according to Las Cruces Fire Chief Michael Daniels.
Young Park Closed for Investigation
As the investigation continues, Young Park and all surrounding roads have been temporarily closed. Police continue to gather evidence and review footage, and they expect to release more details in the coming days.
This devastating mass shooting has left a deep scar on the Las Cruces community. With three young lives lost and many others injured, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the growing issue of gun violence in public spaces. While the suspects have been arrested, the search for answers and justice continues. Community leaders and residents are united in grief, hoping for healing and accountability in the days ahead.
