Money tips for Valentine’s Day
If you and your partner can’t openly discuss your future money goals, that’s a red flag.
MINNEAPOLIS — Relationships can be complicated and around Valentine’s Day, there can be a lot of pressure to impress your significant other.
But what if, instead of planning a date that will only last for a few hours in a single night, you and your partner could instead sit down together and discuss finances and goals that reach far into the future?
It sounds… well, awful… but it can lead to deeper discussions and ultimately strengthen your relationship. Money is hard to talk about and is a huge source of stress for many couples.
Here are three things to consider around money and relationships.
1. If you’re considering marriage, should you sign a prenup?
You’ve probably heard the statistic that 50% of all marriages end in divorce, but it’s actually not true.
Since the 80s, divorce rates have been falling for most age groups. Still, legal experts say that anyone considering tying the knot should think about signing a prenuptial agreement.
The ‘prenup’ is a written contract both partners sign before they’re married.
The document is normally created to protect your financial interests but even if you don’t have a lot of money or assets, a prenup can help set expectations about finances if you do get a divorce.
As long as the agreement is considered valid by a judge, the way you divide up assets, liabilities and debt will be held up in court.
2. Should couples always use a joint bank account?
Talking about money with your partner is important and there is no one-size-fits-all formula for any relationship.
Some people prefer to keep their money separate, but a report from Bankrate shows that couples with joint bank accounts are more in sync when it comes to money and are more likely to respond to their partner’s needs without expecting anything in return.
While it’s food for thought… the most important thing is that you both agree.
3. If you’re still looking for a partner or just want to try a less expensive night out… here are some cheap date ideas!
- Dating a book lover? Find an interesting bookstore and take them along to browse. If you find a book you both need to read, check it out at your local library.
- Volunteer together. Help your community and learn about the values are important to your date.
- Go out to breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day… And usually cheaper than going out for dinner. Plus, if breakfast goes well… you have the rest of the day to get to know each other better.
- How about catching the sunrise or sunset together? It’s sweet, romantic and affordable on any budget.
But really, the best date is one that is special for both of you.

MINNEAPOLIS — As the Lynx battled it out in New York for a chance to win their fifth ring, fans rallied behind them back home at viewing parties across the Twin Cities.
The Riverview Theater in South Minneapolis had to turn people away after more than 700 people showed up for a watch party.
Meanwhile in St. Paul, Black Hart hosted an outdoor viewing party with a big jumbo screen for fans.

Even Senator Amy Klobuchar was out in Minneapolis at A Bar of Their Own with the owners. The woman’s sports bar has been the spot for many watch parties throughout the playoffs.
Mohammed is Black and stands 4’6″ and was last seen wearing only a diaper, according to the report.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Eden Prairie Police and Fire departments are asking the public to help find a missing child with autism.
According to the EPPD, 11-year-old Mohammed Mohammed is nonverbal and hasn’t been seen since 5:15 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Mohammed stands 4’6″ and was last seen wearing only a diaper, according to the report.
The agencies have mobilized multiple search teams, drone and K-9 units to find the boy, but are asking anyone with information on where he may be to call 911.

EDINA, Minn. — With the election only a few weeks away, ballot security is top of mind for officials. An alert photographer shared an image of a lapse in security in a metro suburb on Friday, leading to swift action from Hennepin County.
In a post to social media, the City of Edina shared an image of a silver van with an open trunk hatch and boxes of ballots stacked inside.
Hennepin County issued a statement following the incident, acknowledging the lapse in protocol and calling it “unacceptable.” The county said the driver was terminated.
“Election security is of utmost importance, and leaving ballots unattended is simply unacceptable,” Hennepin County Auditor Daniel Rogan said in a statement.” Hennepin County is reinforcing its transfer protocols with county staff and vendors. An incident like this underscores the value of strong chain-of-custody processes so that risk can be addressed and integrity can be verified.”
County officials said all expected ballots have been accounted for and found no evidence of tampering. Part of the routine ballot integrity process occurring with every ballot transfer includes comparing ballots received with the Statewide Voter Registration System for absentee ballots accepted by cities. Officials said the comparison on these ballots was 100%.
County staff inspected individually sealed ballots and determined they were still in sealed condition. This inspection is also part of the routine election integrity process, officials said.
Officials did not know on Sunday morning if the courier’s other deliveries were affected.
