That never-ending enemy, time, is also very mean to people who are waiting to get stimulus checks, especially ones that have to do with filing taxes, since getting them depends on filing taxes, especially for 2021 taxes that, if not filed, could still get a Recovery Rebate Credit.

Who is eligible?

A lot of Americans can still apply for this up to $1,400 stimulus check, but the deadline is coming up quickly. To remind those who are eligible, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sent out a notice that they need to file their tax return for 2021 before April 15, if they want this check.

It is for people who did not get the third and final round of stimulus checks during the COVID-19 pandemic, as required by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Based on the bank information on their 2023 tax returns, the IRS must send paper checks to people who are eligible. However, if they have not filed their 2021 return or did file it but forgot to check the box and left it blank, they have until April 15 to make this right.

How much will the check be?

What each person gets depends on their adjusted gross income. Single filers who made $75,000 or less in 2021 can get the full $1,400, but as their income rises to $80,000, they can get less and less of it.

Couples who file jointly and are married would get the full $2,800 if their combined income does not go over $150,000.

If you do not file your 2021 taxes by April 15 and claim your Recovery Rebate Credit, the refund will go to the US Treasury. Taxpayers have three years to file their taxes and claim their refunds.
