President Trump had his annual physical test at Walter Reed Hospital on Friday, the first of his second administration.
Mr. Trump stayed in the hospital for just over four hours, significantly shorter than the four hours and 45 minutes scheduled by the White House for the visit. The results of his exam were not immediately public, but Mr. Trump stated that the doctor would provide his medical report on Sunday.
Leavitt, who briefed the press while the president was at Walter Reed, stated that Mr. Trump was “undergoing quite a few tests, imaging.”
Mr. Trump, who is 78 years old and the oldest president to be sworn in for a new term, had his last known full test in September 2023. He revealed only a few information about that visit. Mr. Trump told reporters on Friday that he also took a cognitive test during the checkup.
Presidential physicals are time-consuming and usually involve a battery of tests and inspections.
“The basic thing they are going to be doing are vital signs, your heart, lung, and abdominal exam that you are used to getting at the doctor’s office,” said CBS News medical contributor Dr. Céline Gounder. “Basic labs include cholesterol, blood sugar, and maybe kidney and liver testing. And then, if there is a past medical history of a risk factor or another concern, perhaps an EKG, a chest X-ray, an ultrasound, an echocardiography, etc.”
However, Gounder pointed out that there is another element to it.
“A presidential physical is not your typical physical exam,” she told me. “I think it makes more sense to think about this as a curated medical PR event, really intended to reassure the public that the president is able to perform his duties.”
In November 2023, Mr. Trump posted a letter from his osteopathic doctor, Bruce Aronwald, outlining his September checkup. The letter stated that Mr. Trump’s “overall health is excellent,” his “physical exams were well within the normal range, and his cognitive exams were exceptional.” However, the letter included no data, such as Mr. Trump’s vital signs or medications he was taking.
After a gunshot damaged Mr. Trump’s ear during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July, Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson, a doctor who served as Trump’s physician throughout his first term, wrote a memo about the president’s health.
Jackson said he studied Mr. Trump’s hospital records and found him “doing extremely well” following the assassination attempt. Mr. Trump has stated that the incident has had no long-term repercussions on his health, and that his ear has recovered.
Mr. Trump received his last annual physical as president in June 2020. The White House provided a report of the physical at the time, which stated that he weighed 244 pounds and had a blood pressure of 121 over 79.
