Nicolae Miu trial to begin Monday
Nicolae Miu is charged with first-degree intentional homicide from a stabbing that killed 17-year-old Isaac Schuman and wounded four others.

A man charged with killing a teen and injuring four others will be in front of a judge in St. Croix County Court on Monday morning as jury selection begins.
Nicolae Miu is charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide from a stabbing on the Apple River on July 30, 2022, that killed 17-year-old Isaac Schuman and wounded four others.
A criminal complaint said Miu, who was 52 years old at the time, was out tubing on the river with his wife and friends when the incident boiled over shortly after 3:45 on that Saturday afternoon. Prosecutors say Miu pulled a knife with a blade approximately three inches long from his pocket and lashed out at a group of younger people during a confrontation.
In 2022, Miu told police he acted in self-defense on July 30 when he stabbed five people, including Schuman. The other four people were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Miu was back in court in April of 2023, when he asked the judge to throw out his police interrogation and other comments made to police because he had asked for an attorney first.
“Nick was transported to another St. Croix County Deputy’s squad car,” Sheriff Scott Knudson read from a report while testifying in April. “While being placed in the squad car, Nic asked if there would be an attorney at the jail.”
The evidence is important to the state’s case, because according to prior testimony, in that interrogation, Miu claimed he didn’t bring a knife when he went tubing on the river. That contradicts what his family said, as they told police he brought a knife.

MINNEAPOLIS — If you’re looking for new melodic music, then set aside Saturday night for Ragas of India.
Vocalist Samarth Nagarkar will lead a Khayal music ensemble, a type of classical music that has roots in north India. The music is a blend of melodic (ragas) and rhythmic (talas) improvisation, according to the MacPhail Center for Music.
The performance will take place at 8 p.m. at Antonello Hall in Minneapolis.
Nagarkar and Michael Cain, the director of electronic music recording arts at MacPhail, will visit KARE 11 News at Noon on Thursday to share more about the concert.
The concert has choose-what-you-pay ticketing, meaning that prices start at $5 and you can determine if you can afford to pay more.

Police say the 14-year-old girl was in a crosswalk outside Duluth East High School Thursday morning when she was struck by a vehicle.
DULUTH, Minn. — A high school student in Duluth is at home recovering from minor injuries after being struck by a motorist while walking to school in Duluth.
Police say the 14-year-old girl was in a crosswalk at 40th Ave. E. and Luverne Street near Duluth East High School when a vehicle driven by a 69-year-old woman turned at the intersection and hit her.
A Duluth East school resource officer quickly responded to the scene. Police say the teen suffered minor injuries in the incident and went home for the rest of the school day.
The driver was issued a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Police are reminding drivers in Duluth and elsewhere to use caution when in school zones, and be vigilant for pedestrians.
The center will offer mentorship and support for youth who identify as two-spirit or LGBTQIA+.
MINNEAPOLIS — For a teenager, a kind mentor and supportive environment can make a world of difference.
The QUEERSPACE collective wants Minneapolis youth to have those opportunities. And on Oct. 13, the organization will be taking another giant step toward that goal by opening a youth center.
The center will be a safe space for youth who identify as two-spirit or LGBTQIA+. Services include mentorship, healthcare referrals, support for families, skill building and community resources.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Oct. 13 at 12:30 p.m. before a Spirit Day celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring drag performances, art and music.
The new center is located at 1936 Lyndale Ave. S. QUEERSPACE offers support for young adults up to age 24.
