A Michigan man who was upset about having to watch pets while his girlfriend’s family went on a cruise was sentenced to eight months in prison for making a false bomb threat.
Joshua Lowe, 19, was sentenced to prison during his appearance in federal court in Kalamazoo.
He was discovered to have sent an email to Carnival Cruise Lines in January 2024 that said, ‘Hey, I think someone might have a bomb on your Sunrise cruise ship.’
The Sunrise cruise he mentioned in his email had recently left Miami, Florida, on its way to Jamaica as part of a Caribbean cruise. Onboard were his girlfriend and her family, who had left Lowe to care for their pets while they went on holiday.
According to prosecutors, the hoax email forced the vessel’s crew to check more than 1,000 rooms after it had departed.
The cruise line also had to contact the United States Coast Guard and Jamaican authorities, whose Marine Police were forced to accompany the ship to port.
Assistant US Attorney Nils Kessler stated in a court filing that FBI agents traced the email address to Lowe, who lived with his girlfriend’s family.
‘Lowe admitted sending the message because he was upset that the family went on the cruise while he was left behind to care for their pets.’
Lowe apologized in a letter to United States District Judge Paul Maloney.
‘This is all my fault, and I accept full responsibility,’ he stated.
Anyone who makes a bomb threat should expect to be taken seriously. Fortunately, this particular hoax did not cause physical harm,’ Kessler said.
Lowe’s sentence of eight months is significantly less than the maximum five years he faced.
“Bomb threats are not a laughing matter and are extremely irresponsible,” Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, stated in a press release from the district attorney’s office.
‘When people make false threats, they divert critical law enforcement resources and cause unnecessary fear.
‘The FBI takes all threats to life seriously and will ensure that those who engage in this type of intimidation face the appropriate consequences,’ Gibson said.
