Ramsey County Board to vote on $3.6 million payment for the family of an inmate who died

ST PAUL, Minnesota — The family of a man who died while being held in the Ramsey County Jail in 2022 may soon receive a settlement from the county.

According to court documents, Dillon Dean Bakke complained of pain on August 7 and was unable to stand or walk by August 8. He yelled in pain. The lawsuit claims that jail staff failed to report his condition to medical personnel. He was found unresponsive in his cell on August 9, according to court documents.

“This failure to report and failure to obtain treatment were the result of the individual Defendants’ deliberate disregard for Dillon’s known and serious medical condition. Such failures were also caused by Defendant Ramsey County’s custom, pattern, and practice of withholding and delaying emergency and other medical treatment for detainees at the Ramsey County Jail.

The lawsuit states that the defendants’ failure to provide Dillon with medical treatment violated his Fourteenth Amendment right to adequate medical care.

The Ramsey County Board will vote at their next meeting on Tuesday to approve a $3.6 million settlement for Bakke’s next of kin.

Bakke was initially arrested for fifth-degree drug possession after officers were dispatched to his mother’s home on reports of a suspicious person, according to court records.
