A recent incident at BJ’s Wholesale Club has caught attention on social media after a customer, identified as Fred, shared his frustration online. He claimed he felt like a criminal during a shopping trip that left him extremely upset.

His complaint was about being asked to show both his driver’s license and BJ’s credit card at checkout, which he believed was unnecessary and made his experience stressful.

Shopper Furious Over Identity Verification

Fred took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on April 9 to express his anger with the membership store. He said that being asked for two forms of identification was not only frustrating but also embarrassing.

He wrote: “@BJsWholesale I don’t appreciate being told I need to show my driver’s license AND my BJs credit card in order to cash out! I’m seriously thinking of canceling my membership! Made me feel like a criminal! I pay too much for your stupid club anyway!”

His post quickly attracted attention from others who were curious about BJ’s policies or who may have had similar experiences.

BJ’s Responds, But Customer Unhappy

BJ’s Wholesale did respond to the complaint, trying to offer help. They replied: “Hello Fred! We apologize for any inconvenience. Please send us a DM or email us at SocialCare@bjs.com with your membership number to look into this further and assist you better!”

However, Fred wasn’t satisfied with this response. He angrily replied that he couldn’t send a direct message because the company’s account had DMs turned off. He said he would email instead and ended his post with, “I’m quite furious about this!”

Policy Likely Meant for Security

Although Fred found the process unnecessary, membership clubs like BJ’s have strict rules for a reason. Asking for a driver’s license and a BJ’s credit card at checkout is likely a security measure. It helps ensure that only paying members use the benefits of the club and prevents misuse or fraud.

In fact, other membership-based retailers like Costco also follow similar rules. They may ask for ID and membership proof during checkout or entry to their stores.

Efficiency Also a Concern for the Shopper

Besides the identity check, Fred also complained about the overall shopping experience. He said it was slow and frustrating, especially considering that he pays extra to be a part of the club. Shoppers who pay for exclusive memberships often expect faster service, and delays or strict rules can upset them.
