A man has been charged after a dead body was discovered when he asked a stranger to help him move furniture at his Texas home.

According to a statement from Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, police first responded to a report of suspicious activity at the residence on Friday, May 16.

“A deceased male wrapped up in what appeared to be a blanket,” Lieutenant Abraham Alanis said during a later press conference.

Steven Eberly has since been charged with murder and tampering with evidence, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The victim’s body, identified as Luis Silva Mendez in court documents seen by PEOPLE, was discovered at around 11 a.m. local time by a man Eberly had hired to move furniture at the home, according to NBC affiliate KPRC.

Eberly asked the stranger to assist him in loading items into a truck, and Mendez’s body was discovered wrapped in a blanket in a box, according to the outlet.

According to KPRC, authorities later discovered that an incident occurred between Eberly and Mendez, resulting in the latter’s death.

After the body was discovered, KPRC reported that the stranger got into the truck and began driving down the street to flee the scene, but Eberly allegedly jumped in after him and began smashing the windows in an attempt to prevent the man from fleeing.

The vehicle eventually crashed, injuring Eberly, according to KPRC.

According to KPRC, the body was discovered in the home of Eberly’s girlfriend. She informed the outlet that she was at work at the time of the incident.

The HCSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, May 17.
