Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May each year, means major banks and mail services will close, affecting many Americans’ plans. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 26, and most banks will shut their doors for the day, while mail and package deliveries will be paused.
Bank Closures on Memorial Day
Most big banks—including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citibank, PNC, and Truist—will close their branches nationwide on May 26 to honor Memorial Day. That means over 10,000 bank branches won’t be open for in-person services.
Chase will close all 4,700 of its branches, while Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank branches will also be unavailable. However, ATM and online banking services will still work for customers.
An exception is Capital One: although its bank branches will close, Capital One Cafes, which combine coffee shops with banking services, will remain open.
Why Memorial Day Is Important
Memorial Day began in 1868 as Decoration Day, a way to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. It became a federal holiday in 1971 and now honors all American military members who died serving the country.
Mail and Package Delivery Paused
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver mail or operate post offices on Memorial Day. Only Priority Mail Express will continue to run, as it operates every day of the year.
Major delivery services like UPS and FedEx will also pause most services, including pickups and deliveries. Their physical locations will be closed or have reduced hours. FedEx Custom Critical will be the only FedEx service running.
Customers are advised to check with local UPS and FedEx stores to confirm hours before planning shipments.
Memorial Day Sales to Watch
Despite closures, Memorial Day sales are starting, offering shoppers great discounts. Hotel Collection is offering up to 70% off select items, while BLAQ is running 30% off skincare and oral care products.
Memorial Day means major banks and mail services will be closed or limited, so it’s wise to plan ahead. Customers should use ATMs and online banking for urgent needs and be prepared for mail and package delays. The holiday is also a great time to catch big sales before summer.
