An Indiana man was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after two of his coworkers claimed he tried to recruit them into a plot to kill his wife.
According to court documents obtained by WXIN, a local Fox affiliate, 44-year-old Darshan Soni was accused of attempting to persuade a coworker at Compass Property Group to murder his wife. An anonymous tipster, another Soni coworker, reported their own interaction with the defendant, during which he allegedly inquired about where he could purchase a gun silencer. On May 12, the tipster reported their interactions with Soni to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, launching the investigation into Soni.
According to the police, Soni may have attempted to kill his wife before turning to his coworkers.
According to WXIN, the tipster spoke with a fellow Compass employee who claimed Soni asked him if he would be willing to murder his wife and what price he would accept for such a task. The same employee reportedly told Soni that he could help him create a “alibi” by holding on to his phone, giving the impression that Soni was somewhere other than where he intended to commit his alleged crime.
According to court documents obtained by local ABC affiliate WRTV, that employee also reportedly considered getting cash to buy a Ford Escape, which Soni allegedly planned to use to transport the employee who would murder Soni’s wife. Soni allegedly gave the employee $2,000 in April to use toward the car.
According to WRTV, Soni’s alleged plot had been planned for months, if not a year. The employee, who cooperated with the police in exchange for immunity, told authorities that Soni allegedly discussed various types of poisons and criminal activities.
However, before allegedly turning to his coworkers for advice on how to murder his wife, Soni may have attempted the act himself. According to the documents, Soni’s wife told police that she experienced “quite serious” nerve pain and sciatica in November 2024 and was diagnosed with thyroid issues earlier this year.
When police informed Soni’s wife that she could have been poisoned, she revealed that a smoothie she had consumed months before had an unusual “salty” taste. She also mentioned finding a “white clumpy substance” in the bottom of one smoothie cup. When she confronted her husband about the possibility of contamination, he reportedly dismissed her concerns and informed her that the substance was dishwasher detergent.
During an interview on May 14, the employee told police that Soni allegedly admitted to buying “some type of poison” from India to give to his wife. The employee was also shown a photo of a wig that police believe Soni purchased. The original tipper informed police that they saw Soni retrieve the wig from the employee’s home.
According to the documents, the alleged plot to murder Soni’s wife was to take place on May 16 at the couple’s home. On May 15, Soni reportedly met with the employee with whom he had been discussing the alleged plot at their workplace, and they had a tense conversation about it.
According to WRTV and WXIN, Soni indicated that he wanted to back out of the alleged plot and thanked his coworker for convincing him to do so. According to WRTV, Soni once told an employee, “Mild amounts of violence create problems, while extreme amounts solve them.”
Soni was arrested on May 16th and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. His initial court appearance was set for Thursday.
