A shocking murder case has come to light involving a respected Cal Fire Captain from California, Rebecca. Her wife, Yolanda Marodi, has now been arrested after a one-month search. The case has shocked the firefighting community and those who knew Rebecca personally.
What Happened to Rebecca?
In late February, San Diego County Sheriff’s officers found the body of 46-year-old Rebecca at her home in Ramona. She was reportedly killed on February 17. Authorities believe she died after a fight with her wife, Yolanda Marodi. Rebecca’s mother called 911 after hearing a struggle on a Ring camera installed in their home.
A disturbing video clip was found where someone is heard shouting, “Yolanda, please, I don’t want to die.” Moments later, Rebecca is seen with what looks like blood on her back. Yolanda’s reply in the video: “You should have thought of that before.”
Yolanda Tried to Escape to Mexico
After Rebecca’s death, Yolanda fled across the U.S.-Mexico border, traveling with a small white dog. Homeland Security tracked her movements, and eventually, Mexican police found her near a hotel in Mexicali, close to the U.S. border.
She was arrested by Mexico’s Baja California security officers and handed over to U.S. law enforcement. She now faces murder charges.
Yolanda’s Violent Past
This is not the first time Yolanda has been involved in a violent crime. Back in 2000, she was convicted of killing her previous partner, James Joseph Olejniczak, in San Bernardino County. She spent over 13 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and was released in 2013 under parole supervision.
Relationship Trouble and Jealousy
Friends and family members of Rebecca say her relationship with Yolanda was toxic. Rebecca’s ex-wife, Lilia Phleger, said that Yolanda was very jealous and did not like Rebecca keeping friendships with other women.
Lilia shared, “You don’t want someone you once cared about to suffer. What happened to Becky in our old home is unimaginable.”
Rebecca’s Career and Legacy
Rebecca began her firefighting career in 1993 as a volunteer in Moreno Valley. She later worked as a seasonal firefighter and got promoted to Captain with Cal Fire in 2022. Over the years, she served in many places like Perris, Menifee, Temecula, and finally French Valley.
After Yolanda’s arrest, Cal Fire released a statement:
“Becky was a beloved member of our Department and community. We miss her greatly. We thank law enforcement in both San Diego and Mexico for their efforts.”
This tragic case has shaken the community and highlights the serious impact of toxic relationships and unresolved violence. Rebecca was a brave and respected firefighter who spent years saving lives.
