A gun was discovered in a second grader's pocket at St. Paul Elementary School

ST PAUL, Minnesota — According to St. Paul police, a gun was recovered after a second-grade student brought it to school to show friends on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Bruce Vento Elementary School, 409 Case Ave E., on the city’s east side. A police spokesman confirms that squads were dispatched following reports of a student brandishing a gun. When the police arrived, a staff member informed them that a gun had been found in a student’s pocket.

Officers discovered the handgun and learned that the second grader brought it to school to show friends. SPPD says the gun was unloaded, no one was injured, and there is no ongoing threat to students or the school.

KARE 11 contacted the St. Paul Public Schools for comment, and received a statement confirming the gun incident at Bruce Vento Elementary.

“We do not believe the student intended to use the weapon, and no threats were made,” reads the SPPS statement.

“As soon as the weapon was discovered, the school followed protocols and safety procedures, immediately contacting the district’s Security and Emergency Management department and the Saint Paul Police Department for assistance.” Everyone is safe at the school, and the district is working closely with SPPD to investigate this incident.”
