Musk, the unofficial head of DOGE, a Trump-created program to reduce spending, concentrates his efforts on detecting “waste and fraud” at the SSA, which administers Social Security and SSDI. The South African IT billionaire has asserted that there is “$500,000 to $700,000 million in unnecessary spending,” but has not provided any proof. For example, SSA announced the removal of 7,000 positions, mostly in non-critical sectors, as well as the closure of ten regional offices, leaving just four operating. This would result in increased wait times and fewer service channels, according to experts.

Former officials, such as Martin O’Malley, former SSA commissioner, have been more forceful: “Cutting staff and services could collapse the system in 30 to 90 days,” he said. Musk has made questionable assertions, such as “millions of deceased people receive benefits,” which are contradicted by official statistics. The SSA states that fewer than 0.5% of payments are incorrect or fraudulent, although DOGE propaganda claims this proportion is greater. This has resulted in intensive audits, even of previously validated instances.
Advocacy organizations claim that the emphasis on fraud is a cover. “Most errors are administrative, such as outdated addresses, not organized scams,” said Rebecca Smith, a social policy specialist. However, the pressure to save $7 trillion in a decade—DOGE’s goal—supports Musk’s method.
