On Monday, Bill O’Reilly delivered good news for America, as long as you can accept tidings that are completely cryptic, non-specific, and without a timeline beyond “soon.”
“I talked with President Trump briefly over the weekend,” O’Reilly said on his “No Spin News” show, which appears to be on a network but is available on his official website billoreilly.com. “And he says there is going to be some very good news for the country coming up shortly.”
Anyone hoping for something substantive may be excused, but O’Reilly did state that he and the president “were talking about economics and foreign policy” at the time.
O’Reilly, whose journalism and conservative-commentary career spans six decades, had a golden opportunity to press the president for details that could alleviate the anxiety caused by global market volatility.
“I didn’t push him on it — it was a casual conversation,” O’Reilly explained. He then dismissed the notion that a lack of familiarity with Trump led him to pass on such a loose, low-hanging thread.
“I’ve known the man for 35 years,” the former Fox News host stated. “He has never misled me once. He’s been mad at me, but even then, he’s just ignored me or texted me about how terrible I am — you know, that sort of thing. But he has not misled me. If he says there are good things ahead, I tend to believe him.
Had O’Reilly, whose 50-plus years on television have rarely included taking politicians at their word, been more specific, he could have done a lot to alleviate the country’s economic motion sickness.
“I can’t get more specific than that at this point,” he told me. “When I can, I will.”
