South St. Paul police say 36-year-old Jacob Audie is still in jail after allegedly shooting and killing the man he was supposed to be caring for.
According to court documents, Audie admitted to shooting and killing Michael Schille with the victim’s own assault-style rifle on Friday night. They had shared an apartment for two years. According to police, Audie assisted in the victim’s care as well as cleaning the apartment.
Audie was charged with second-degree murder on Monday, and a judge determined he was a flight risk. He is in the Dakota County Jail, and bail has been set at $1.5 million.
Neither the police nor the county attorney identified a motive, making it even more difficult for Schille’s daughters to understand what happened.
“It’s also been a shock to lose him. “We thought we still had time, but time isn’t always on our side,” said Jessica Comer and her sister Andrea Schiller.
The two said their father suffered from health issues and got along with Audie, and that the murder “doesn’t make sense.” Comer said her father was a veteran who enjoyed telling jokes and riding his Harley-Davidson.
“We were always on the river every weekend on the boat and that’s just how we grew up,” complained Comer. “Unfortunately, we won’t get to make anymore of those memories.”
According to the documents, Audie also unloaded the magazine and placed it on the table, as well as removing a round from the chamber and placing it on the couch.
Neighbors who also live in the apartment building describe Schille as a pleasant man who would try to assist when possible.
“He didn’t deserve that at all, no matter what he did, or had done in the past, or what he was doing,” tenant Alan Morrison said of Schille.
Tom Truttle has lived next to the apartment building for over 40 years and claims that murders are uncommon in the area.
“No matter what it was, there’s better ways to handle the situation,” Truttle told reporters.
Audie is due back in court on April 21.
